Norway to bring in circumcision law - The Local

Norway is planning to introduce new regulations on circumcision following a push to ban the practice from Norway's leading child rights official
Health Minister Bent Høie said he would introduce new legislation on the non-medical circumcision of boys under 18 before April next year.

“We will review submissions on the matter before we can decide what should be the government’s position. We aim to present a bill before Easter,” he told Aftenposten.
“This is not due to any lack of understanding of minorities or religious traditions, but because the procedure is irreversible, painful and risky,” she told Aftenposten.

Good. We need to put an end to this barbaric practice. It's primitive and serves no purpose and as it is said, it's irreversible and risky. Not to mention some dodgy practices that have been going on in some jewish communities where the rabbis would suck the blood of the baby from the circumcission... bleah

Personally I agree that non medically needed circumcision is barbaric but if the Norwegian authorities really believe they are going to stop it happening within communities for whom it is a sign of their covenant with God which has been practiced for hundreds/thousands of years they're pissing against the wind.

Jews have integrated very well in western society and especially in the nordic countries. Also, a lot of jews are very secular and those that aren't orthodox jews have abandoned quite a lot of jewish practices (as decreed per torah) and adopted western ones. I am sure that the majority of jews will adapt to this legislation and uphold it as I am sure that there will certain jewish communities that will find ways around it.

Then they will be jailed for child abuse. It's pretty easy. Anyway, what Jews practice today is not what their faith demands of them. They are not supposed to be removing the entire foreskin according to their faith.

You don't need a circumcision in a northern country. It only makes sense if you live in a south country where your dick will be cooked under the blazing sun and will smell nasty. The same applies to burkas, turbans an veils. In Norway you need a good pair of moccasins and a fur jacket, especially this time of the year.

Sounds like the physicians want more of the action. Assuming "non-medical circumcision" means what I think it means.

Why are people talking about Norwegian Jews? There are only about 800 of them.

There are somewhere around 100,000 Muslims in Norway, however, so if people wish to discuss the community most affected, that would be it.

It will be regulated for religious consideration. It won't be ended.

The Conservative-Progress government is considering suggesting regulations to control circumcisions but with taking into account religious freedom, the Norwegian Foreigner newspaper reported Monday. A Conservative leader of the committee on health care said that a complete ban on hospital circumcisions “will only lead to this being carried out by non-professionals” with possible risks.

Good. If people feel it is a part of their faith, they can have it done when they're old enough to make the choice themselves.

I have been saying this forever. Where does parents get off in removing parts of theirs childs body because they happen to believe in a certain faith? What if their child grows up and doesn't practice their faith? Tough? Oh, how wonderfully ethical of them. We should all look towards them for their ethical understanding.

I'm an extremely secular and areligious Jew, but I'll probably still have my kid circumcised.

What if he grows up and doesn't practice your faith? What if he's an atheist for example?

When my boys were born, (both are now in their mid 20's) I had them circumscised. I never gave it any thought, really.

After some consideration in my later years, I wondered if I should have. My relationship with my boys is such that I felt comfortable with asking them their opinion. Both of them said they are happy that I did it.

I have read quite a bit on the topic and I am not convinced either way.

Both the commonly argued positives and negatives are grossly overstated for a first world individual so this debate doesn't really move me.

I'm of the opinion that medical procedures should have a semblance of practical necessity but I can't really see it being a big deal either way.

I don't get it. Why would I cut my child's ear off? ... I mean, carve their bottom lip off. Slash the tip of their nose away?

Ohhhh. We're talking about slicing a part of his dick off. Yeah. That's sensible.

Then he'll be just like me I suppose.

I don't get it. Why would you remove a part of your child's body for a faith that you don't even care about yourself and you know they might not either? I'm sorry, but I can't figure out what you reasoning might be.

The foreskin has more than a dozen functions that are lost when you remove it. Why do you need more than that?

Good! If any Muslims or Jews have a massive problem with this then they should probably look to move to a country where it won't effect them.

While I constantly marvel at the versatility of my foreskin I can't really say the loss of it would have a significant impact on my life.

Because it's a part of our communal and familial heritage, it's a way of marking yourself as part of the group. The primal appeal of that should be easy to understand. It just doesn't bother me because it's a very minor procedure with negligible impact beyond the aesthetic so I wont lose much sleep over it.

You know your heritage is messed the hell up when it includes removing parts of other peoples bodies without their consent. Sorry, if that offends, but really, you're doing it because of heritage? *slaps myself silly* It's not minor or negligible. I have no idea where you're are getting your facts.

Thanks for your uninformed opinion.

Yeah it is a bit primitive, but it is rather negligible so I don't mind buying into it.

Nobody is banning it for alll, just don't do it on children. It seems perfectly logical to me. If people want to have it done as adults, then that's fine, they can.
