No government "worker" has ever lost so much as a dime in a shutdown. Generally they stay home and receive full pay when the shutdown is over, Those who go to work are considered essential and are paid normally.

Non-essential workers do NOt report to work.

Essential workers DO report to work.

Both classifications are NOt being paid.

Meaning essential workers that are reporting to work are doing so without knowing when they will get paid.
This includes the military.

So…while you might find it appropriate to have people owed paychecks…🤷‍♀️

If all you want is national security, then sure, the rest of the gov't is non essential.

trump and R's did this 8 yrs ago. Why did they cave then and reopen this non essential parts of govt?

The House of Representatives passed a clean continuing resolution on 19 September 2025 that maintained current spending at the FY25 BIDEN budget level. That bill requires cloture in the United States Senate and that requires 60 votes. The Republicans have 53 seats in the Senate. The Democrats are filibustering to prevent cloture on the clean CR. This shutdown is 100% on Chuck Schumer.

Chuck wants to add funding provisions into the seven week CR which is not the purpose of a CR. A CR just keeps finding at current levels.

Gov't main job is to protect it's citizens from internal threats aka criminals, and from external threats.
Most other things are non-essential.
Gov't is way to big for its britches and has been for too many decades.

What conspiracy theory do you claim? Are you saying that Schumer did not shut down the government? The the Schumer Shutdown is a conspiracy theory and the government is still open?

They don’t need 60 votes. They need 51 votes twice. The Republicans can do that without a single Dem vote. But the Republicans chose to shut the government down instead.

CRs can change funding.

The House CR has funding for security and DC that is new. MAGA house simply doesn’t want to fund Medicaid expansion so they are not.
