NHL 2014/15 Season

Another proud moment for the Shanahan led Leafs last night. In the Leafs illustrious almost 100 yr existence, Shanny's Leafs team now holds the record for fewest wins (2) in a 20 game span. The record book accomplishments for the Helen Keller of the Leafs front office just keep piling up.

And for all the CORSI buffs, the Leafs lost last night doing it the "right" way. They won the puck possession battle and out shot Florida 29-17. Another great accomplishment for doing things the "right" way.

Florida, on the other hand, accomplished a win doing it the "wrong" way - what used to be the Leafs successful way of playing - they took advantage of their chances, scoring two power play goals and rode the superior goaltending of Roberto Luongo to a relatively easy road win. Now that Florida is a mere 2 points out of a playoff spot, I'm sure all the brilliant stats minds will come out and start complaining that Florida isn't winning the right way and they should tear it up and ship all their players out and start again.

I feel sorry for Florida - poor saps don't know they're really terrible. But then, they had Peter Horachek as their brilliant interim head coach last year, suffering a disastrous end of the season, and chose not to resign him for the permanent job. Such fools. Now the brilliant Helen Keller of the Leafs was able to scoop up this masterful leader and install him in the Leafs head coaching job.

I can't wait for the next major accomplishment of Ms. Keller and his band of idiots.

Due to draft positioning, the Canes really need a loss against the Leafs tonight.

Islanders are for real.

Ahahahahaaaaaa.............please man....There's no "real" regarding the Islanders and November.

Come back in March. Then we can talk about "real" or not. :lamo

What can I say.....you were right. The Islanders are for real this year.

*slinks away.....*

The NHL website is now listing advanced stats, though because apparently names like Corsi and Fenwick where too complex, they renamed them all. NHL.com - Stats

WTF? I didn't see any definitions either (although I'm on a phone).

Is SAT Corsi and USAT Fenwick?

I just know Duncan Keith is #1.

Yeah, though they are lacking C% and F%.

So today the Flyers beat #1 Preds in OT shootout, but previous game they lose OT shootout to last place Sabers.

So how about those Blackhawks today!

So how about those Blackhawks today!

I was just about to post on this. I find it interesting that the Blackhawks, a preseason top three favourite to win the Cup, is in a serious funk and it's not unreasonable to wonder if they'll make the playoffs. Minnesota is red hot, Los Angeles is even hotter, and if San Jose, Calgary, Vancouver can turn things around and Winnipeg stay relevant, the Hawks may be in for a battle for a wildcard spot.

I'm rooting for Calgary - I'd love to see Brian Burke succeed in Calgary the way he wasn't allowed to succeed here in Toronto. But I'm ready to predict a Los Angeles/NY Rangers final once again this year.

Of all the teams in the East currently in playoff spots, I'd route for the Islanders to win the East if the playoffs started today.

Sort of the rags to riches story of the East.

Thats a bit of a far reach on the Hawks. Quenneville basically said he's punting the regular season at the beginning of their extended 8 game homestand... and they went on to go 2-2 -3, with the next two games against Florida. They are five behind St Louis, and Winnipeg is about five below them - Minn is about seven. With some spirit, they might make second place. They wont fall to fourth - the team is way better than they have been playing, and everyone knows it. The only game they showed some actual spunk was against the Red Wings, and for maybe the last period against the Devils.

Heck, even Carcillo looked bored when he was starting fights.

At this point, the forwards arent producing (but this is a matter of effort and luck more than anything) Crow has recovered fine from his party injury, and this is the traditional time in the season where the BH take a mental break from hockey. Im not worried about them getting to the playoffs, but I am worried about the defense when they get there. Keith and Hjalmarsson cant do it alone, and Oduya looks to have lost it this year, and Rosival is worthless. Seabrook as usual has shining moments punctuated by absolute stupidity, but that hasnt changed at all.

I'm not predicting they're going to miss the playoffs, just that it's not unreasonable to envision scenarios in which they might not. They're definitely not playing well lately, and for a prolonged period of time - yesterday's debacle against Boston could be a catalyst up or down, who knows right now. As a life-long Leafs fan, however, I can tell you that once in a funk, particularly late in a year, it can be difficult to shake out of it because most other teams are in higher gear going into their playoffs push.

I agree with the sentiment - I'm usually a fan of the underdog and new blood doing well. I picked the Islanders last year to beat Pittsburgh in the first round and they would have done it if Pittsburgh hadn't benched Fluery halfway through the series. As a goalie fan, I'd also like to see Halak do well after being cast aside by Montreal after a good playoff run and then St. Louis last year.

So in the last week, the Blackhawks have lost Oduya and Kane for significant time(Kane 6 to 10 weeks, Oduya "a couple weeks"). That is going to make things harder, though it might force the other players to up their game and maybe play a bit better. This year is the last year in Chicago's window for serious cup pushes, so you would think they would really push. Things are going to be alot tougher for them next year.

Boston loses last night and the Flyers choked on their own excrement by allowing Carolina to beat them.
A wonderful point swing opportunity down the toilet.

I don't expect the Flyers to make the playoffs, but dammit they at least need to beat the 'Canes. :doh

Trades starting to happen. Tlusty to the Jets for a 6th and 3rd round pick. Sekera to the Kings for a first rounder and a prospect. Winnik to the Pens for a 5th, a 2nd and a nobody.

Korrection on Kane. It is now listed as 12 weeks out as opposed to 8 to 10. He would be back about the time of the Conference finals.

Cheer up - Flyers are in Toronto tonight and Helen Keller's team is ripe for the picking. I predict 5-1 Flyers.

Kane is out 12 weeks, after surgery, not back until late rounds of the playoffs, if Chicago makes it that far.

I'll go out on a limb and say that Chicago makes no moves before the trade deadline, unless it's to unload salary with an eye to next year's dismantling. Kane's injury makes it a given, in my view. They were life and death to be relevant with Kane - they can't replace him - and so they are now toast for this year's playoffs.

The way the Flyers play teams with worse records than them (only a small handful), I wouldn't bet money on a win tonight.
