...likely to only have 6 candidates in it. Fox Biz channel laid out the criterea and it looks like it will probably be:

1) Trump
2) Cruz
3) Rubiio
4) Carson
5) Bush
6) Christie

I think this will help the lower 5 here take on Trump. More time for all to speak which means soundbyte garbage won't fill the time enough. You'll have to have more content and less bloviating. This will hurt Trump and help the others. Personally I think this is were Cruz will begin to close the gap.

The clown car becomes a rogues gallery. As a non-partisan I don't see the reduction as a culling of the least worthy. There are no most worthy.

Agreed. But I think this decision will change the dynamic of their debates and the race on the right altogether.

This will be a Boon for Trump he will be able to call them all losers instead of having to focus on just 1 or 2 candidates.

Wow. I did not expect to find myself rooting for Christie...

Great to see Gov. Christie in there.

Dr. Carson, not so much.

The good doctor should be hanging-out with Herman Cain over a pizza, trying to figure out how they were so clueless!

Kasich should be in there instead of Christie or Carson. Guy puts more policy answers out there than most of them.

What the hell has become of the GOP?

Good point.

Put Kasich in place of Carson.

Plus Kasich has VP potential.

I don't want the GOP to win at all. So for my sake... I'm glad he's not in there because he as a prez or vice prez candidate for the GOP would be a tougher fight to beat for sure. Pretty much locks up Ohio.

Well, yes, the Republican party needs to play dirty in order to secure Trump's failure to obtain a nomination. In the next month, I'm willing to bet that the names on the list will drop down to 2, and it will be Cruz vs. Trump. The Republican party is going to threaten Rubio, Carson, Bush, and Christie with everything they've got (or else bribe them with high level cabinet positions or support for them to be Speaker of the House, Majority Whip, etc) to get them to drop out. If not, they'll just remove them from the final Republican debates.

The Republican establishment is as corrupt as the Democratic establishment (which is doing the same thing to Bernie Sanders), if not more. So they need --and they will get-- a single contestant against Trump. That will be sufficient to oust Trump, as Trump can't seem to poll higher than ~46%. And as poor racist white voters are the least likely of the Republican party to vote and are Trump's strongest supporters (and the most likely to show up at the polls and populous being the Religious Right, who like Trump the least), this will probably be enough to get the Republican establishment what they want --and a pretty overt use of their power, too.

Remember, our democracy is bought and sold, and our master's keep their chains very tightly around our necks. You dare not go against their wishes, or they will flex their muscles. The sooner poor whites understand that they've been lied to and deluded by the Republican party, and join in with the rest of the middle-class and poor minorities, the sooner their lives will improve.

I disagree with your assessment. GOP loyalists and old guard within the party HATE Cruz. If they favor anyone it will either be Rubio or Bush.

They may hate Cruz, but I think they realize it's unlikely that they can push Rubio through. I may be wrong, though, and you may be right. But my guess right now is that they'll compromise on Cruz to avoid Trump. But they may try to push Rubio through, which might very well cause Trump to win the nomination.

Rubio is looking good in the debates. Probably the best in the debates IMO but it flies under the radar with all the Trump vitriol dominating the news cycles. I think with less folks in the lineup, Rubio may very well shine brighter. I think they'll push Rubio or Bush, whomever has the biggest momentum. What Bush has in his corner is insane superpac money that could push a late momentum surge as the field shrinks.

Sorry, I was about a few weeks out of date in my Republican primary polls. Yeah, they may push Rubio through, and it may succeed. We'll have to see. Bush is possible, but I think the Republican party is aware of poor a chance Bush has in the national election. Rubio stands a vastly better chance to get the presidential nomination I think on those grounds alone. But we'll see.

Both bush and Rubio are fairly well liked in Florida so that's one helluva state to take in a general.

Florida won't secure the national election though.

I feel the sameway - I'd prefer Bernie over the entire lot.

But as a strong VP candidate, it would be interesting to hear the governor's platform.

And I must comment: Not being on the stage is not detrimental to him being picked as a running mate.

With Kasich and one of those two... that's possibly Florida and Ohio though.

Maybe, yeah. The thing is, if Hillary runs, I very likely won't be voting for her over the primary/Debbie Wasserman Schultz trickery, and I'm not sure that any youth/black/Latino is going to be hard into getting Hillary into the Whitehouse, which were the vital groups for Obama, although women will definitely rally behind Hillary. For what should have been a very strong position, she sure is making sure that she comes out of the nomination as weakly as possible. And needlessly, too, I might add. Still, good money has her winning the national election.

Cripes, you will never get it even after Trump has climbed to 40% in the polls. Aren't you tired of being a hooked fish played on the line?

Trump salivates over being taken on by 'all five'. He revels in the attention. All Trump. The talk before the debate will be all Trump and, if possible, even more 'all Trump' after the debate. What 'exactly' new are Bush, Christie' going to say to dethrone Trump? Zilch.

The only thing interesting about the debate will be the Trump/Cruz dynamic. Cruz has to walk a line between still acting like he still has a chance for the nomination and shmoozing with Trump to be VP or to win over Trump's core voters in 2020.

Lots of great content here, but I'm not so sure the GOP elite want Cruz up there at the top, and for quite a few reasons.

I think Rubio is the guy they will push (if he appears viable & Bush does not).

He's climbed to 40% in the polls thanks in part to the oversized debates where only soundbytes survive and the harshest soundbytes make the news over and over again... and that's where he excels.

You have your theory and I have mine.

Who are the GOP elite? What is this mystical force with magical powers?

Can someone give actual names. Seems this mystical force has been completely ineffectual to date. Are they going to get a Trump voodoo doll and stick pins in it?
