Nelson Mandela: 'doing well' in hospital

Thank god. Mandela is an amazing man. The world is lucky to have him.

I would have no problem but he supported Gaddafi therefore I can no longer support him as a great hero.

The relationship dates back to when the anti-Apartheid movement had no supporters and were characterised in Western nations as terrorists. Countries like Britain and the US were covertly supporting the Pretoria government's repression and Libya was the ANC's most staunch supporter. You don't entirely abandon someone to whom you owe your nation's liberation.

Usually you stop supporting people when they start slaughtering people in the streets. Its also sparked anti-black racism, Gaddafi's mercenaries were black Africans so Gaddafi spawned more hatred towards blacks.

Someone should send him a pick-me-up. Maybe a burning tire wrapped around his geriatric body, One of the ANc's favorite gifts..

As soon as you're systematically and brutally oppressed in every facet of your existence, you can do just that.

best wishes to him; I hope that he's feeling better.

I have a great deal of respect for this man and I really don't understand people who have anything against him. The story of his incarceration is particularly inspiring to me. I hope his health improves.

Seconded.

The thing is, nobody lives forever. I hope he lives longer, but if that means more years of poor health and poor quality of life then I wish him a serene and painless passing, secure in the knowledge that he is much loved and respected across the world.

Please feel better soon Madeba. I dread hearing the words telling us that you have gone home. I don't think we'll ever be ready for that.

lol posting hateful messages behind your computer screen in your safe western country. Who are you to judge Mandela?

Get well soon Mandela.

If you are talking to me -- a student of history. Like most leftists hero, he was more cowardly than courageous. He's venerated for the color of his skin, nothing more. If he were white, no one would even know his name.

lol what are you talking about!? He freed his people from oppression under a imperialistic racist government so that all the people could stand as equals ( sound familiar?). I've been to his prison cell and let me tell you if I had spent the same amount of time as he did in that prison I would of come out and brought down hell fire on the people who put me there ( as would most people), instead he embraced them and united all south Africans under one flag. He's about as far away from cowardly as you are a student of history.

He didn't free ****. You know nothing about history. The only thing he did was kill a bunch of people, many of which were innocent.

he didn't free ****? Lol so just to be sure are you saying that Nelson Mandela had nothing to do with the collapse of the oppressive white government and did not help bring equality for black South Africans?

I just find it unbelievable how anyone can hate Mandela or try and play down his amazing life. Its interesting though because in the West we have many examples of regular people rising up against oppressive regimes in order to achieve better living conditions, more money, the right to vote. You look at the French Rev, English civil war, the American Revolution these are all examples of regular people forcibly removing tyrannical/oppressive regimes and often these conflicts started with what was probably judged as an "act of terror" or treason, the American Government killed thousands of fellow Americans in order to unify the states and free black people from slavery. But its fine because they were white people in the "civillised world", Mandela though he was black and from South Africa so he is just a dirty terrorist who was only interested in harassing those poor white folk....

Libaya was an enemy to freedom which is what Mandela stood for.

Col Gaddafi inspired South Africans to fight for their liberation, funding and arming the anti-apartheid movement as it fought white minority rule. What he did in later years is a different story, kind of like how the West armed Saddam and trained Bin Laden hindsight is a wonderful thing.
