My roommate has become an angry feminist

PS. A politics site is one of the few places, I can have a serious discussion about this, with political phobia being almost everywhere else. So, when I want to talk seriously about politics, I will take the opportunity to do so, in this environment especially created for it, rather than give into the pressure to laugh and make people laugh, as you want me to do. Hopefully, this makes things clear for you.

Im starting to think YOU have a problem understanding how forums work. Ive been on them for over a decade. You are starting to act like an ass. Lighten up!

So we're on about the same page as to how long we've been on forums. That has nothing to do with you trying to forcefully inject humor into a serious discussion.

Mell, I think most of us know that your heart is in the right place. That doesn't mean that you can't laugh once in awhile. Jokes are jokes, even sexist ones. Even racist ones. Even religious...ist ones. ;) They all have their place and it's okay to lighten up and laugh. It's okay to recognize the existence of the 'stereotype truth' in one's own 'group'. Be it gender, orientation, religion, race, country, etc. It doesn't take away from the heart of the matter. In fact, it only helps. Because being so serious all the time, so literal, really only hurts one's chosen cause. This is why "femnazis" make women look bad. They're so goddamn serious and take everything to extremes. And you border on that... you're teetering right there on the edge....

Just... laugh a little. We all know we're bitches a week out of the month. Not much we can do about except make fun of ourselves when we can. And make fun of men at every opportunity. ;)

Unfortunately, it is something that happens a lot, but one would expect better of those who are experienced with engaging in political discussions.

I wouldnt even know where to start reponding to such a patronising piece of rubbish, as this post is, or whether it even deserves a response.

One would. Maybe change your sig file to "Live and Let Live". :)

LMFAO :rofl

Don't worry, it'll be the last time I'll bother being nice to ya. Carry on with yer badass self

Nah, I want to show my travel site, more than I want to tell people to 'live and let live'. :) And, political discussions are difficult for people, so I sort of understand why people heckle.

Okay ... I'll go to your travel site. ;)

Cool! :) Travel is pretty much my biggest passion in life. It is politically interesting too, because I get to hear the political opinions of those who are in the places I read about in the news, while I am actually in the places the stuff happened in.

My best friend / roommate (a dude) has embraced wholly embraced feminism in the last few months. Not just the literal "I think men and women should be equal" type of feminism, which I think just about everyone believes. I'm talking about the stereotypical, bra-burning, head-shaving, angry lesbian type of feminism. You know, the kind of feminism that makes most feminists run away from that label, lest they be grouped in with these zealots.

He has actually started using the phrase "The Patriarchy" in conversation un-ironically, and curses at me when I order a Miller Lite in a bar because their commercials are supposedly anti-women. When I explained to him that the so-called pay discrepancy between men and women is largely due to different career choices rather than sexism among hiring managers, he started calling me out whenever our mutual friends are over and telling them what "detestable political opinions" I hold.

Now I consider myself pretty progressive, and pretty sympathetic to women's issues in general. But God this is annoying. I don't understand what would drive someone to this toxic ideology. My roommate didn't act like this until a couple months ago...and I know for a fact he isn't just doing it to get into some chick's pants. His girlfriend is a hardcore Ayn Rand-style libertarian who doesn't care about this at all.

How can I cure my friend of this brainwashing?

I feel your pain.

How easier for you it would be, if he was just another regular sexist male!

The funny thing is that he's such a huge hypocrite about this **** too. He boycotts Miller Lite and Bud Lite for airing commercials that he thinks are misogynistic (and expects everyone around him to do the same)...but he's not above making "iron my shirt" type jokes when it's just the two of us in the room. The jokes don't offend me (as I make un-PC jokes too), but his hypocrisy does.

He also went on a rant a while ago about how plastic surgeons are responsible for making women feel bad about their bodies...despite the fact that he explicitly said "no fatties" on his OKCupid profile until I called him out on it. And he rants about the evils of prostitution as being degrading to women...despite the fact that he regularly jacks off to internet porn.

He's become such a douchenozzle. He left this douchey Facebook status update: "Women are human. Apparently this view is controversial!" :doh
I really hope this is just a phase, because it's annoying the piss out of me.

There's some middle ground between hating women and seriously using the phrase "The Patriarchy" in conversation.

Hypocrisy is pretty typical of folks with extremist views, it's virtually inevitable since they hold everyone to insane standards that no person could live up to, not even them.

Sure. I however see nothing wrong with using the word patriarchy in a conversation. Ex: Religions sound pretty patriarchal to me.

I just wanted to pop in because I saw Paris posting, and I wanted to say hi. :2wave:

No, not like that. Like an entity. For example, "Women can't live up to their potential because of The Patriarchy." Anyone who seriously uses that phrase in conversation is a Grade A douche.

Sounds like you need to break your foot off in the crack of his behind, causing him to land on the curb... then throw his bags out after him.

A guy becoming a radical feminazi? Seriously?

Something is wrong with him.

I wonder if it's a ploy to appeal to other femnazis... I fear this man may lose his right to his testicles. As a male and his roommate, you must take it upon yourself to preform the sacred duty of castrating your friend, for he is clearly unworthy of the almighty jewels of manhood.

I only kid

That is very nice of you. Thanks for your kind regard. I hope you are well. Hi right back at you:)

Your friend is to a large extent right about this. It is possible for women to succeed, but they are going against the grain to do so, as the power systems of politics, religion, work places... were set up with the needs of men in mind. This is what your friend is describing. I wouldnt write off what he is saying too quickly, as nonsense.

Maybe his is just exploring his throughts, rather than being a hypocrite. He is dealing with a confusing and complicated topic. It is easy to be a critic.

I suppose some avoid hypocracy by having no standards or politics at all. But, I suppose that in itself is a standard, abait a low one.

Geesh man, do you claim him as a friend in public.
For me, it would be quite embarrassing.

 no fatties and douchenozzle
