The new Museum of Tolerance New York opened in the heart of Manhattan this week, citing an ambitious mission to help enlighten city residents and tourists on issues of discrimination, prejudice and social inequality.
But the museum's financial backer, the Wiesenthal Center of Los Angeles, says it cannot tolerate the planned location near Ground Zero for a mosque and Islamic community center.
Rabbi Meyer May, the Wiesenthal Center's executive director, on Thursday called the mosque's proposed location “insensitive” to the people who experienced the 9/11 attack that killed nearly 3,000 in 2001 and are still dealing with “extraordinarily painful wounds.”...
In Jerusalem, Israel—where the Wiesenthal Center plans to open its next Museum of Tolerance—construction of the proposed tolerance museum has “resulted in digging up the remains of people who had been buried in a Muslim cemetery for generations,” Ms. Lazreg said.
The word tolerance IMO is ill-defined, people view tolerance as being nice. When in fact tolerance should be defined as being against using the jackboot thugs of the government to violate the rights of a fellow citizen.
Small government, except for enforcing my moral views on the rest of the population!
Holy **** a real museum of tolerance?!
In all seriousness, this is rather ironic that they're complaining about the insensitivity of the location (which I agree with) while on the other side of the world they're digging up a graveyard.
I've heard that someone suggested to place a gay bar next to the mosque. I'm sure they won't mind, we all know how tolerant zealots are.
Then again, I can be a tactless douche who feels like the best way to react to tactless douches is to give them their own medicine back at them.
Holy **** a real museum of tolerance?!
I wonder if it has a "Tunnel of Prejudice"? That ride looked AWESOME! I'd want to go on it again and again.
There is indeed more to the story. But, there's more to the story...
Mot/Jerusalem is not an Israeli initiative. The Simon Wiesenthal Center is an American chartered organization based in Los Angeles. I personally think they should find an alternative nearby site such as the old abandoned Jlem Bus Station.
I've never visited the Simon Wiesenthal Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, but from what I understand it focuses almost exclusively on the Holocaust.Yes, I understand this. And, your idea of finding an alternative location is a good one.
But as the article states, the MoT has a rather...interesting...perspective on tolerance.
Strange that Jerusalem was selected for a new MoT because the largest Holocaust museum/archive in the world is already located in Jerusalem... Yad Vashem.
Gee wiz, maybe even New York.Yup. It might be an idea to site it somewhere more in need of the message of tolerance... Tehran? Moscow? Rome even?
