I bet if this happened in Berkly or some other very liberal town his military ID probably would have gotten him a ass beaten or got him him killed.

Muggers Show Respect for Army ID

MILWAUKEE - A Milwaukee Army reservist's military identification earned him some street cred Tuesday, when he says four men who mugged him at gunpoint returned his belongings and thanked him for his service after finding the ID.

The 21-year-old University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student said he was walking home from work about 1:15 a.m. Tuesday when he was pulled into an alley and told to lay face down and with a gun to his neck. Four men took his wallet, $16, keys, his cell phone and even a PowerBar wrapper from his pants pockets, he said.

But the hostile tone quickly changed when one of the robbers, whom the reservist presumed was the leader, saw an Army ID in the wallet. The robber told the others to return the items and they put most of his belongings on the ground next to him, including the wrapper, the reservist said.

"The guy continued to say throughout the situation that he respects what I do and at one point he actually thanked me and he actually apologized," said the reservist, who asked not to be identified Tuesday because the robbers still had his keys.

The reservist said he asked the men, who all had hoods or hats covering their faces, if he could get up and they said he could before starting to walk away.

"The leader of the group actually walked back, gave me a quick fist bump, which was very strange," he said.

Milwaukee police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz said the reservist is credible and that officers still were looking for the suspects Tuesday.

The reservist didn't realize until later that his keys were not with him and he doesn't know if the robbers intended to keep those, he said. Still, he said he feels lucky.

"I'm just kind of awe struck that everything was given back to me due to just being in the military, " he said. "I realize in pretty much every other situation that wouldn't happen."

That doesn't even make sense.

Yeah, cuz every one knows us liberals hate the military.

James, are you ever embarrassed at what you post, or does the stupidity of it escape you?

I said very liberal town. Not every liberal town.

Are you saying that if this story happened in Berkly California a town notorious for hating the military that the results wouldn't be different?

Depends on the muggers. Muggers are not known for being big partisans, and respect for troops is not liberal or conservative.

Muggers have political beliefs just like the rest of us and if a mugger was raised in a hippy household with anti-military sentiment then that mugger might feel hostility towards service members.

, and respect for troops is not liberal or conservative.

You are right on that especially when it comes to disrespect. I can show you Code Pink as leftist scum who hate the military and you can show me Pred Phelps as a right winger scumbag who hates the military.

Damn dude. Third post into the thread and you're already flaming.
One would think you come from a rightwing, neocon type environment. That's what THEY do.

But, to stay on topic, I heard about this here in Milwaukee. I s'pose there is some honor amongst thieves after all.

But the violent crimes around UWMilwaukee is getting serious. Not so much on-campus but take a step OFF campus and you're fair game to these thugs here. It's a straight shot west to MLK. Easy pickin's and right back home. Same goes for Marquette U.

My middle son attends this university. I worry about him every day. There is absolutely no safe place to park unless you go into the campus structure and then walk a mile to get to class.

I sometimes wish we could take vigilante action against these hoodlums. Swear to gawd, I hate their guts. But I digress. There is already too much hate in this world.

Hippy household... :rofl

Dude, you totally crack me up. We hear about people like you but not very many people can say they actually know of one. But we can.

Gotta love the diversity here at DP.

The flaming started in the first post, with the attack on us liberals and how we hate our troops. It's a lie, and it gets old.

From what I have seen, Code Pink are women and men of courage and principle. If most American 'liberals' were like them America would not be involved in these idiotic foreign killing sprees.

Fred Phelps is just a nutjob attention whore (no offense intended to honest prostitutes).

They are two sides sides of the same coin. They are both nut job attention seeking whores who hassling the military or military family members. Siding with our enemies and hassling military recruiters is not courageous especially in a time of war.

While I would agree that a large number of liberals support the troops in their own way, I have to admit that I agree with the original comment.

I have lived in the SF Bay Area. In fact, I was stationed there from 1990-1993, during Gulf War I. And because I was recovering from an injury, I spent a lot of time commuting to and from the Oakland Naval Hospital.

And to call the environment "Hostile" is putting it mildly. We even had an order that we were not allowed to travel to and from the hospital in military uniform, we had to travel in civilian clothes. This was enacted for our own safety, after several people from our base had been physically attacked, harassed, threatened, and even chased.

And in my off time, I had people pick me out by my haircut and harass me constantly. Berkley (which I only went to 2 times) is one place I will never return to again. Being spit on 3 times in 30 minutes was not a pleasant experience. And I had been pushed, shoved, insulted, and threatened in areas ranging from SF itself, Oakland, South San Francisco, Sausalito, Sunnyvale, San Jose, and more recently Los Angeles, Inglewood, Culver City, Long Beach, and Santa Monica.

I have to admit, I feel safer here in the Middle East then I did in Baghdad By The Bay.

You should spend time in Norfolk. "No sailors or pets" signs where not uncommon at apartment complexes until the city made them illegal. The police targeted vehicles with DoD stickers on them. Jacksonville Fla was almost as bad. It seems that most military towns I have been to don't like the military people. The military is largely young, loud and heavy drinking, and as such people tend to resent them...until there is talk of closing one of the bases in a town.

Sadly, that is all to often true. I remember it being like that in Long Beach, Oceanside, San Francisco, and in El Paso today.

And most of the time, you only see that attitude in bigger cities. Ones where their size and economy have surpassed the need of the base. In areas like Jacksonville North Carolina, Yuma Arizona, and Enterprise Alabama, it is not like that at all. These are communities that know their livelyhood depends heavily on the military.

I remember being in Jacksonville NC in 1990 during the first Gulf War. As Marines deployed to the region, the town got emptier and emptier. By the time I was transfered, it was like a ghost town. Bars were closing, apartments and houses were vacant, shops were laying off people because of a loss of business. During the month of December 1990, the entire county had only 5 home sales. And in the next year there were a record number of home foreclosures in the region, because without buyers or renters a lot of people could not make their mortgage payments.

Fayetteville NC and the surrounding area loves it's military personnel.

"Siding with our enemies?" I've never seen Code Pink side with the right-wing authoritarian assholes (and their unprincipled "centrist" fronts and stooges) who deceived Americans into a stupid and unnecessary war.

You are so right. They sided with the insurgent assholes who killed our countrymen.
