MLB 2016 thread

Scherzer v. Hendricks isn't particularly close.

SCHERZER: 284 Ks in 228.1 IP (led NL in both categories), 6.2 bWAR, 3.24 FIP. His walk rate almost doubled, but that's from a historically good low from last year.
HENDRICKS: 2.13 ERA (led league), but 3.20 FIP (a negligible difference from Scherzer, benefiting from better defense, mostly), bWAR of 5.0.

Lester would probably get it over Hendricks, although Hendricks was absolutely lights out in the second half of the season - kind of like Arietta in 2015 (up until the 2015 NLCS).

Managers almost always over-manage in the postseason. LaRussa was notorious for it.

The #1 pitching staffs in the AL and NL face off in the WS AND both teams have the possible Cy Young winners on their staffs?

Yet neither team had a starter go more than 6 innings? That's really pretty amazing. I understand in the playoffs it's 'all hands on deck' and both teams have good bullpens so the managers will go to their pens more than usual. But that strategy almost backfired on the Cubs. Lester and Chapman were not the best choice, Madden should have stayed with Hendricks.

And even looking how ineffective Miller was last night, maybe he was overworked.

Scherzer gets it over both. Kershaw would get it over either if he hadn't missed half the season.

Maybe? He was blowing at the end of his last appearance.

Also off the chart TV ratings win for Fox and MLB. The Cubs were suppose to be a big draw, and they were. They are 1 of the 'national' favorite baseball teams. This was the best Game 7 WS ratings since 2001.

Probably the only WS match up that would have been better ratingwise would have been Cubs vs. Red Sox.

World Series TV ratings: Epic Game 7 was off the charts

About 100 days until pitchers and catchers show up, assuming Feb. 12th or so will be the day P and C show up.

Great Series, utterly epic! Both teams did themselves proud, and the fans all got their money's worth! Congrats to the Cubs, and kudos to the Indians, because by the end, they'd won me over with their scrappy, never say die attitude.

Greetings, DiAnna. :2wave:

Living in the Eastern time zone, and just recovering from the excitement of a game being tied in the 9th inning around midnight my time, and the mood of everyone at a euphoric high, I was not happy with a rain delay! I didn't know how much of a delay this was going to cause, and it was already past my bedtime, but how could I just turn off the TV and not know what was coming next just because I was tired? I couldn't - I was too wired! :lamo

I agree with everything in your post, and it will be a game I'll never forget! Congrats to both teams!

Ortiz won't even be the top Red Sock (?) in the voting. If anyone else wins AL MVP, it'll be Betts.

You can make a good argument for Porcello, but wins don't mean as much in the voting as they used to, and for good reason.

Ortiz was the best hitter on Red Sox. .315/.401/.620 slash line.. 38 HRs and 127 RBIs.. all at the age of 40. The Northeast bias and DH bias is gonna be heavy for him.

Britton's got a tough row to hoe, because the voters are becoming less and less inclined to give closers much Cy Young Award credence, especially now that relievers have their own real award.

As an Orioles fan.. I don't see it either.

Best hitter, worst baserunner, and nonfactor in the field.

What "DH bias"?

Should be with DH Bias ( meaning rarely voting for them)...He put up ungodly numbers for 40 year old.

The Blue Jays ownership and management has continued the cheapening of its roster as it moves from a team wanting to win to a team just interested in being in the conversation enough to keep the majority of fans hanging around. Instead of signing Edwin Encarnacion to a pretty reasonable five year contract, they've gone on the cheap and signed Kendrys Morales for three years, $33 million as their DH, effectively ending pretty much any chance they will sign Encarnacion and likely sending him to a contending team in the AL that really wants to win. You don't just walk away from the guy who led the league in RBI and was in the top 3 in HRs and has, with Bautista, been one of the top 5 in HRs the past 5 years. He joins the cheap, and bad, move to trade for Melvin Upton to play the outfield.

It's not surprising that once Shapiro and Atkins left Cleveland, the Indians went out and made a big move to trade for Miller to get them to the playoffs and to the WS. If those two cheap bastards had still been in Cleveland, they'd have been trading away assets at the major league level and acquiring draft choices and prospects instead of loading up for a WS run. They now bring that loser mentality to Toronto.

The Blue Jays ownership, since the death of Rogers patriarch Ted Rogers, has been a penny pinching, low class operation. His children sold off the company and it's now run by a corporate board. Not surprisingly, not too many free agents with options ever consider the Jays as a place to land. They see and know too well that Rogers is mercenary and uninterested in fostering a classy franchise that respects and rewards its stars. You'll never see an Ortiz or Jeter type retirement tour with the Jays because such players would have been discarded long before.

The NFL does it right - they don't allow any team ownership to be majority corporate - the face of all franchises is an individual and usually an individual who loves the game and loves their team and wants to succeed.

Donaldson won't win MVP. It will be Ortiz.. you know voters.
Porcello is my CY in AL

A good call on the Cy. I figured voters had gotten over wins as a legitimate barometer of a pitcher's goodness by now.

Voters will only change when this old breed dies out. Until then it's gonna be about Wins and IPs. ERA be damned. BBWA is predictable. Same ol, Same ol.. Zach Britton should have won the CY this year but it's the BBWA and he had no shot because of their barometer of innings and wins. I don't even know how Zach Britton didn't even get in the top 3. He was the best pitcher in AL this year. Britton did something this year.. that Eckersley and Gagne never did and that was have a less then 1 ERA. If Gagne and Eckersley got the Cy... Britton should have gotten it too, right? But since the BBWA is predictable I picked Porcello.

JV was robbed due to Fred Goodall and Bill Chastain.

The voters have the right to vote for whomever they want unless something illegal went in.

I actually stopped paying attention to Verlander during the All-Star break. I didn't realize he had such a good second half.
