Missing Milly Dowler's voicemail was hacked by News of the World

Murdoch has been a malign influence, in British politics at least, for the last 30 years as his media empire has grown. He was courted by all sides for his support, and for fear of his disfavour. The reaction to his predicted downfall may seem extreme, but we are so pleased that our political class are showing the early signs of growing a spine.

-- why is there any debate on this? --

The corp is not disbanded, the attempt to take over Sky is simply on hold unless further revelations drive investors and shareholders away. Murdoch may be investigated for two US laws (payments of bribes by a US citizen in another country) and phone hacking in the UK by a US company; possibly in the US too.

Regarding discussion - there are elements of both sides of the political divide here who have curried favour, we have Gordon Brown's attack now looking like he attempted to change public perception of his involvement with News International and Ed Milliband (who seems not to have had any dealings with News International) being the one leader to come out of this with any credit.

The story is not dead yet.

And not before time. Now Les Hinton who went to head up the Wall Street journal and Dow Jones has gone too. Murdoch has met the Dowlers and apparently is deeply humbled - full page apologies to appear in the press this weekend.

Is this full scale climbdown or yet more trickling of sacrifices while the big prize of Sky remains once all the hoo-ha has quietened down?

Brooks has been arrested.... Murdoch JR next?

Brooks has been arrested.... Murdoch JR next?

She was arrested by "appointment" meaning that the police probably told her to appear at a police station at a given time. Today's papers have been focusing on the police involvement and stories released of payments and treatments donated to senior policemen.

Paul Stephenson (Met Commissioner) has resigned - probably better to resign and be arrested than be arrested in post. (would it affect his pension?) and Number 10 has been very hasty to say that Stephenson's hiring of NoW exec Neil Wallis is nothing like David Cameron's hiring of Andy Coulson.

I suddenly suspect that we could lose a Prime Minister over this within the next 6 months or less, especially as Coulson was made a personal guest of David Cameron at Chequers after he resigned.

The Sun website hacked by "Lulzec" tonight, the whistleblower who told the world about the corruption at NoW found dead today, top policemen resign over the weekend, Rebekah Brooks arrested, MP's openly talking about Cameron having to consider his position..

What else is going to happen in this story?

The Sun website is now intermittently available - my last attempt 2 attempts (must be the first time in years I have tried their website) 5 minutes ago and 3 minutes ago had different success. 5 mins ago - the Sun began to load up but stopped. On refresh the Sun's servers now send me a "internal server error" message.

Lulzsec also claiming to have hacked the "new-times" website.

Five senior Metropolitan Police officers referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission today... and so it goes on.

About time too, we now know news International were paying policemen, we know it seems to have gone quite high up the ladder (if not James Murdoch, Andy Coulson and Rebekah brooks - the cheques had to be signed) but no policemen have been identified till now. In my eyes Stephenson was definitely a "dirty copper" - his bungs have been reported widely.
