Missing Milly Dowler's voicemail was hacked by News of the World | UK news | The Guardian

Milly Dowler disappeared at the age of 13 on her way home in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, on 21 March 2002.

Her supposed killer was convicted last week I believe, although there is big doubt that he did kill her... he is in jail for other murders of children already.

In the last four weeks the Met officers have approached Surrey police and taken formal statements from some of those involved in the original inquiry, who were concerned about how News of the World journalists intercepted – and deleted – the voicemail messages of Milly Dowler.

Enough is enough.. this has been a systematic breaking of the law for a very long time by the News of the World, a mouth piece of Newscorp and Rupert Murdoch and now this... interference in one of the biggest missing persons/murder investigations in UK history.....They ****ing deleted voice mails on the girls phone number..

This has to be the last straw not only for News of the World but also for Newscorp in the UK. I hope the government blocks NewsCorps takeover of Sky for one over this.

And dont tell me that NewsCorp did not know what one of their newspapers was doing.... NewsCorp is a control freak of an institution and News of the World always was the main outlet of scandals against who ever Murdoch hated at the time.

The BBC documentary above was pretty convincing. The killer has a flat near where the poor girl was taken and they showed video footage which put him in his red car within 2-3 minutes of her last sighting. If you watch the programme, it's pretty clear.

This report is really disturbing. Hacking into her account and then deleting any messages is beyond the pale. They are reported to have done this which suggested she may still have been alive. I wonder whether there are grounds for police action in terms of obstructing a murder inquiry in which case the most serious charges should be laid against them.

I doubt that Murdoch will have to pay or that his dealings will be affected though.

Seems it was not only Milly Dowler's but also other murder victims voice mails..... this is now coming up in an emergency debate in Parliament tomorrow. One of the present directors of NewsCorp in the UK, was the editor of the News of the World when this happened.... so this goes all the way to the top so to say.

The Soham murders are being revisited, the police investigating the NoW hack of Milly Dowler have contacted the Soham kids parents.

In a statement released to the Guardian on Tuesday, Mulcaire made no direct reference to those allegations but apologised "to anybody who was hurt or upset by what I have done".

He said: "Working for the News of the World was never easy. There was relentless pressure. There was a constant demand for results.

"I knew what we did pushed the limits ethically. But, at the time, I didn't understand that I had broken the law at all."

He added that he "never had any intention of interfering with any police inquiry into any crime".

BBC business editor Robert Peston says police are investigating whether the phone of Jessica's father, Leslie Chapman, was hacked by the press.

There is as you say a Parliamentary debate tomorrow but I can imagine backdoor pressure keeping the NoW afloat - the real problem the NoW faces (and this is serious) is that major businesses have or are reviewing their involvement and advertising in the NoW.

Ford have pulled out, Virgin, NPower and Halifax are all major corporations. If these and all other major companies pull out, this will end the NoW.

And a Face book page has gathered pace suggesting the boycotting of the NoW and The Sun. Something that is not to be took lightly in my opinion. This kind of action [it cant be called journalism] is truly despicable and i hope some senior executives are brought to account with Criminal charges.

Then then editor is now a News International executive and a friend of our Prime Minister.

I joined - not that I read or buy those papers but I wanted to register my protest.

I don't remember how things work but don't the papers themselves have a self monitoring body? (Which has remained quiet throughout)

The funny thing about this is, that News International have stated that their editors did not know about the hacking, and yet every present and former editor that the news channels interview state that that is bull****. An editor knows everything that is going on else he/she is totally incompetent.

Now a massive amount of companies are pulling their advertising from the News of the World and the debate in Parliament had one very clear tone.... Rupert Murdoch and his News Corp should not take over Sky...

Also it has come out that police have been paid by the News of the World.... so now the UK police have to investigate that as well.

I say kick Murdoch out of the UK for this. He aint a citizen of the EU let alone the UK and should not own such a huge portion of the media in any country he is not a citizen off. Let him brainwash Australia and the US with his criminal activities, but enough is enough in Europe.

Not as simple I'm afraid. Ofcom can't investigate as the phone hacker may have interfered with a police inquiry - making this a police matter and as you say also - some of the police were in the pay of the NoW. Possibly other papers did this too.

We also need to know why the police knew about the hacking in 2006, knew about Milly Dowler's phone, the Soham parent's phones, that victims of the 7/7 bombing in London had phones hacked and also that some police had been in the pay - and have done nothing until these last two weeks about informing possible victims and the public.

BBC: Robert Peston

The whole thing stinks to high heaven. Interestingly, the editor of the NoW at the time was... Andy Coulson who protested innocence and lack of knowledge of all these goings on.

Dead soldiers' families 'hacked by newspaper'
Phones owned by relatives of dead UK soldiers were allegedly hacked by the News of the World, a national newspaper reports.

The Daily Telegraph claims the phone numbers of relatives of dead service personnel were found in the files of private investigator Glenn Mulcaire. BBC

Each revelation seems to plumb depths I never thought possible. If the NoW still exists in a year's time I would be surprised.

Murdoch came out and said the claims of hacking were deplorable, however his standing by Rebecca Brooks (she has already agreed before a Parliamentary committee the NoW paid police) shows where his true feelings in this matter lie. the man thinks he's above the law.

This case has shown how corrupt NewsCorp and their media (fully owned) outlets are. Now I have not read the Sun today, but the Sun usually is a very pro-the-troops newspaper and the revelations that NoW and NewsCorp hacked the relatives of dead servicemen's phones would normally be front page news. Not in the Sun today.... in fact some pundits on Sky News and BBC say they dont mention it all!

If true, then this clearly shows a top down leadership that dictates what is news and what is not.....

The Royal British Legion (RBL) has cut ties with the News of the World as its campaigning partner amid claims the paper may have hacked into the mobile phones of bereaved military families.

The forces charity said it was "shocked to the core" by the allegations. BBC

Hopefully this is the end of "Essex Man's" or "White Van Man's" links to the Sun and NoW. These papers have btrayed a certain core value of their remaining die-hard readership.

Anyhow - current NoW editor Colin Myler has put out a statement to staff here and Rebekah Brooks statement to staff is here.

Everyone there seems innocent...

Reaction is coming in to the announcement that Sunday's issue of the News of the World will be the last edition of the paper.

It follows claims the paper authorised hacking into mobile phones including those of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler and the families of 7/7 bombing victims.

News of World closes: BBC

This doesn't end the matter in my eyes. Andrew Coulson, Rebekah Brooks etc are all still there. Murdoch still dictates how his newspapers operate.

There's already talk of simply running a Sunday version of "the Sun" - same staff, same modus operandi and presumably the same sneering disregard for the public and parliament. All Murdoch has done is close a label - everything else remains the same.

One comment was that Murdoch has sacrificed the jobs of 200 working journalists to save his CEO. Then there's the pending approval of his bid to take over B/SKY Broadcasting. That has to be in the balance now.

The culture secretary cannot block the bid other than on "plurality" grounds apparently. There is the "fit and proper" element but I think it will go ahead.

A few things have come out tonight while watching the news.

  • Rebekah Brooks was (still is?) the proposed CEO of B/Sky B if News Corp is successful.
  • Sun on Sunday will be the replacement newspaper once NoW publishes its last this Sunday.
  • The web domain and names for the Sun's Sunday paper were bought and registered a few days ago in preparation / foresight.

David Cameron is just not coming out of this at all well, he's been tardy in pushing for the inquiries and has left it to Labour and Tory outsiders like Boris Johnston - Tories who were hacked - to call for tougher moves.

James Murdoch has clearly misread public anger on this, I don't know that people who chose to cancel their Sky subscriptions will be able to without cost but I know a lot of friends who have Sky and would wish to cancel if the sale goes ahead successfully.

A couple of friends have cancelled. They report that they had to pass by a recorded message offering £20 discount for 6 months to stay with Sky!

Question Time yesterday was excellent.

What is becoming clear is that Cameron and his top MP aides are going to try and push any judicial inquiry out into the long term - the claim being that an inquiry running alongside a police inquiry will provide mutual interference. I just don't think they really understand the public mood as well as Murdoch has. The sudden closure of the most profitable Sunday Newspaper was Murdoch's reaction - he has made a cynical first move which could help clear the way for him to bypass the plurality check on his buying up Sky.

It's also clear that some higher up MPs are suddenly finding their testicles and are prepared to stand up to Murdoch's papers. Hugh Grant came out really well last night, I had a new respect for the man - his recollection of how Rebekah Wade / Brooks refused to turn up to Parliamentary Inquiry 3 times and then her papers outed Chris Bryant (instrumental in calling for her appearance) as gay.

We now have new developments too - Andy Coulson and one other former senior exec to be arrested today- the arrests sped up by leaks and tip-offs by News International.

The cynicism goes on - Murdoch will feed us sacrifices until the public clamour is sated.

Bye bye News of the Screws! :D

Andy Coulson has now been arrested.

wasn't it the u.s. government a couple of years ago doing the same thing to u.s. citizens? why didn't we get just as infuriated about that?

because it was a Republican who set it in motion...

Some of us did think it was bang wrong but there's no point fuming about it from the other side of the Atlantic is there?

On a more serious not I was watching the exchange on this in PMQS the other day and I was expecting Miliband to score more points about David Cameron's links with Murdoch. It seems as though there's almost a conspiracy of silence on the kind of influence he has in this country.
