There are some red states, particularly in the plains and I believe Utah, that are more competitive, but the best standards of living have consistently been in Northeastern US states and the worst in Southern states and Appalachia. A state like MN is in the upper half, and a state like AL is a bottom-dweller, owing to its legacy of segregation and continued unwillingness to repair past injustices. Minnesota has those issues as well, but not as acutely as states in the Deep South.
