An elderly Michigan woman died in October as the result of a severe dental infection after adult dental Medicaid benefits were cut in the state. Blanche D. LaVire, 76, had been diagnosed with abscesses earlier in the year and reportedly suffered from advanced periodontitis.
Governor Granholm is currently the subject of a class action lawsuit brought on behalf of 400,000 citizens whose dental coverage was eliminated by her cuts to Medicaid. Granholm cut the adult dental benefits as part of an assault on social programs meant to address a $2 billion state budget shortfall. Along with eliminating dental coverage for hundreds of thousands with her Medicaid cuts, Granholm also cut $62 million in funds for state mental health services, $5 million in funds to hospitals for the treatment of the uninsured and approximately $100 million altogether in aid to cities and towns.
This is why I find social programs of this variety so hideous. people become reliant on the government... instead of self reliant.

Why didn't she go to the ER?Those horrible Republicans...... But wait, her medicaid benefits were cut by Governor Jennifer Granholm, a Democrat.
I wonder how the Democratic supporters will react to this.
One thing is certain. If you are poor and elderly, you might as well get in line to be floated away on an iceberg. That is what it is coming to. And it also goes to show that Democrats don't have a pedestal to stand on in this argument. But, I am sure that they will continue to try and find one, so they can keep calling Republicans callous.

Jeez, we are talking about an invalid elderly lady here. What do you want her to do? Go to work? Jesus H. Christ!!
Family, friends, charities... no.. she relied on the Government, and the government failed her.
But we need more government to make sure this doesn't happen right?

I think the point is, that if she had known that there would be no help from the government in her golden years, she might have planned better while she was able to work and make money.
Ala New Orleans, LA and Katrina
Yes, government failed the People in New Orleans and LA during Katrina. It started with the failure of the city government and their failure to have adequate emergency response plans or to implement the ones they did have. The Parish level was no better. Then you get to the State level where the Governor refused, even after being asked, to request aid from the Federal government, a legal requirement prior to Federal resources being able to mobilize within that state.
When it comes right down to it, Bush got a bad rap because the Democrats at all levels of local, parish and state government were both incompetent and negligent. Since their were no Republicans in positions of power in LA at any level of authority, this is a pretty safe statement to make.
Shouldn't the article say Medicare? Do the elderly also qualify for Medicaid?
The story is so sad .... no link tho, can't read the rest.
