This song was sweet when I was in my 20's, still a pleasure in my 30's ... but in my 50's ... it's a bit chilling. Actually, I'll still hum it to myself around the house, but I'm a bit shy of singing it when my husband is at home. I'm afraid he'll get depressed about disappeared dreams.

Another favorite which gets a little colder with age ....

Another that gets to me every time that I hear it...

A song that gets me about realizing that your way of life is gone and never coming back.

This song turns me into a blubbering idiot.

Chorus:

Every pill I took in vain
Every meal for you I made
Every penny I put away
Asking for flowers
Is like asking you to be nice
Don't tell me you're too tired
Ten years I've been working nights

No doubt, there are countless songs about the affects of losing the love of one's life...

You want melancholy?
Can't beat this ...

If that opening verse don't suck you right in, I don't know what to say!

Nilsson is so damn good!

(so I'll seque with this)

“.......from the moment I could talk, I was ordered to listen.”

Family lore has it that my maternal grandfather, a veteran of both world wars, told me, “Now that you can talk, shut the hell up!” I was too young to remember.......

Johnny Cash doing a Nine Inch Nails song seems to hit the spot for me.

Assorted ....

Songs that start that way but describe ending it...

Bookends with tttwt’s “Stay”
