NEW YORK -- Mark McGwire finally came clean, admitting he used steroids when he broke baseball's home run record in 1998, but he also said he didn't need performance-enhancing drugs to hit the long ball.

McGwire said in a statement sent to The Associated Press on Monday that he used steroids on and off for nearly a decade. Later Monday, however, he disputed that the drugs gave him more power to hit homers.

I doubt anyone is shocked. Jose Canseco wasn't lying. Will Sammy admit it next?

Sammy might, but Bonds never will. It's not as though there was ever any doubt with these superhuman hitters. I still don't know whether or not to care if they use steroids in baseball. Cheating is getting an unfair advantage; with steroids so prevalent in baseball, it only serves to level the playing field.

These steroid users supposed "records" should be expunged from the record of baseball. How Charlie Hustle was banned for life and these suckers are still somehow part of the game is amazing to me.

How can you hit a steroid fueled pitch without a steroid fueled swing? These drugs have ruined baseball, it's a problem that isn't easily fixed, and probably won't be.

Holy ****! McGwire used steroids!

OMG...look outside! The sky is blue!

He wants to get into the Hall of Fame, and it didn't seem like they were going to vote him in, perhaps until he made this admission. He wasn't going to make the same mistake Pete Rose made. Personally, I think the HOF is a joke until both McGwire and Rose are in.

I don't see anything morally wrong with using steroids.

Was it against the law at the time? Was it against the league rules?

I think it was always against the law, and technically it was against the league rules for at least some of those years, but they didn't test for it.

Are you saying that you get your moral code from our government and Major League Baseball? :rofl

It's legal some places to to marry your 16 year old first cousin. It's legal for her to get an abortion.

Taking drugs to gain an unfair advantage is immoral IMO. It's dangerous. See Lyle Alzado.

i think it was illegal. but poor mark should know that the public knew he was a juicer, and now we know for certain he's a liar. asshole.

It's easily fixed. Those caught using steroids should be banned permanently from baseball and have their statistics permanently removed from the record books.

Since I see no moral fault here, I'm looking for a technical fault.

So was it against the law or no?

Ok, so it's a technical violation which he lied about, which plays to his character.

How severe of a violation is it? How much was he using?

Degrees of use are irrelevant. THAT they use is relevant, and therefore should expunge their statistics and disqualify them from HoF.

I think it's a scream that he says it was the hardest day of his life. Let's see, he keeps all the money he made while he was on steroids, probably keeps the record, gets another high-paying job ... damn, I wish my life was that easy.

See there's nothing wrong with using, though.

for me, it doesn't matter, although he was probably using quite a bit, as he upped his weight by about 50 lbs, and hit like a demon. he allowed people to believe he broke a legitimate record legitimately, which he didn't. he basked in the glory that wasn't his.

he lied, and lied again. no character.

So...ban creatine next?

Yes. After the Anabolic Steroids Control Act of 1990 it was illegal to use the steroids in the fashion that McGuire claims to have used them.

Was it against the league rules or no?

Not explicitly, but there was a ban on illegal substances,.

Personally, I don't think it was "immoral" to use them, though.

Ok, so he knowingly broke rules he agreed to follow.

Any word on what his penalty should be?

And why the **** was Congress ever involved?
