Several of the candidates have already said that while campaigning. Most know whether they will vote for Trump or not so they want to get on with the campaigns. If the Ds dont pick a good candidate then the indies could be lost to third party votes again. Most indies are pretty moderate.

I wonder if a third-party candidate will be as attractive as in 2016, though. I think a lot of people's sense of fair play has been offended and that this may have an impact on votes.

Could this be true? And why would McConnel deprive Trump of a victory announcement at Tuesday's SOTU? The CNN correspondent was alluding to Chuck Schumer's ability to tie the procedure up with amendments, and the GOP Senators want 10 minute slots to add their vote casting rationale to the record. So they were trying to work something out.

Still, I find it hard to believe McConnel would go against Trump by moving the time-frame. I suspect if he does, it means Schiff/Schumer have some power we are not aware of, or his Senators are getting nervous and indeed want to rationalize their votes.

So, we shall see.

And Trump is communicating with Mitch telling him to get it done today. He doesn't want this to go through the weekend and the Super Bowl. He spent millions on his Super Bowl ad and doesn't want the message of that ad undermined by his impeachment trial.

There was a poll in Colorado that over 60% wanted Trump removed. National polls have been very clear: 75% wanted to hear Bolton and see the blocked documents.

You can be sure that Colorado (which are very blue now) voters care that Gardner towed the party line, and Arizona and North Carolina have trended very purple in the suburbs, and they have been hostile to people they perceive as Trump lackeys.

I would love to see person-in-the-street interviews in various towns in flyover country--Lincoln, Nebraska, Janesville, Wisconsin, and, oh, pick any average town. My guess is that independents and other ordinary folks are as eager as I am to have this over.

It never shows up as important on polls, and every interview I've seen with media types who spend a lot of time interviewing voters has said it never comes up - and if they bring it up, people say they don't care all that much about it.

McConnell clearly fears he has overplayed his hand, or he wouldn't be doing this. He knows the optics of "the first impeachment trial without witnesses" is terrible for headlines, and is definitely going to anger independents that wanted a serious trial that was about evidence.

If the Democrats are smart they'll force a censure vote. This is the one setting where they don't need to overcome a filibuster.

The democrats are not going to force a vote. Those idiots, Schiff in particular are enjoying their moment in the camera too much. I do get tired of the begging by democrats to "please do it my way because we f'd it up really badly." This is very simple the democrats should have done the job and subpoenaed all the witnesses they wanted and gone to the courts to make it happen. There argument that now the Senate should do that is stupid. The same court challenges could occur in the Senate. That "it would take too long" crybaby reason holds no water.

That's not what I asked you. I asked you to show which polls ranked the issue as an important one to voters. That was your claim; you said it "matters greatly." Mere preference on any given question doesn't automatically make it an important issue which will affect how people vote. People can easily say they want witnesses but not really care that much about it.

Yes, Trump's liason has been going outside the chamber often to make calls. But I don't think Trump is going to get what he wants today. The big question is will he get his SOTU announcement.

I think keeping three of the candidates off the campaign trail will definitely have repercussions.

Trump has done nothing but push independents away. More than 50% want him impeached and removed. Perhaps they will have to defer removal until November, but there is no reason to think that the current mindset will change and that this group would sign on for 4 more years of Trump's antics. Why would anyone?

It's insanity that they are not interested in calling witnesses. Bolton keeps talking, and his book is going to come out. They will try to rationalize their votes, but it cannot be done.

My husband hasn't been in the United States very long, and he is shocked and dismayed by this legal process. He keeps asking, "how could they not call more witnesses?" And he keeps saying, "Americans don't care. Americans don't care. I was wrong for thinking this country stood for something, and Americans stood against corruption."
