McConnell proposal would push final impeachment vote to Wednesday

I do. He gets a monthly contribution from me. I actually know the guy. It's a pity he isn't getting better traction, as I think he is the strongest in the Democratic field.

He's a good guy and I'd love to see him on the debate stage.

And if they had the WH lawyers would have done a 180 and argued the courts had no jurisdiction to settle a dispute, then appealed it for at least a year. Trump played keep away with the courts too many times for them to fall for that game.

No other administration has challenged congressional oversight and impeachment powers like this. Not even Nixon.

Nixon didn't have Fox News and talk radio.

They should have subpoenaed him the first time.

They did...then Bolton tried to tie his subpoena to Klapperman's subpoena and lawsuit. When that failed he threatened to file a lawsuit of his own. So the House dropped the subpoena rather than wait years for it to move through the courts.

Hello, what's this? I found this on Axios, and it was also referenced by a CNN corespondent live at the Capital Building.

Could this be true? And why would McConnel deprive Trump of a victory announcement at Tuesday's SOTU? The CNN correspondent was alluding to Chuck Schumer's ability to tie the procedure up with amendments, and the GOP Senators want 10 minute slots to add their vote casting rationale to the record. So they were trying to work something out.

Still, I find it hard to believe McConnel would go against Trump by moving the time-frame. I suspect if he does, it means Schiff/Schumer have some power we are not aware of, or his Senators are getting nervous and indeed want to rationalize their votes.

So, we shall see.

Yeah, I just heard about this. I can't believe McConnell agreed to this. Sounds like some Senators want sound bites for the campaign season.

Will this **** NEVER END?

"Deliberations" are actually called "Morning Business", and it means any Senator can get up to the podium for 10 minutes and talk. About half of the Republican caucus did NOT want to push through the "acquit" vote until they'd had a chance to speak to the tv (read, their constituents) to justify their vote. To get that, Moscow Mitch had to capitulate to Schumer that the vote wouldn't come until Weds., depriving Trump a chance to strut at the Superbowl and gloat at the SOTU. :)

P.S. I didn't make this up, lol, a CNN reporter got a copy of the compromise resolution a couple of hours ago.

That’s ridiculous. I get it though. These Republican senators want to save their own asses and talk themselves out of what they will do. They need to try to reason away what they did. I say, get them all on record. I have given money to many of their opponents, and I am going to keep giving and registering until they are gone. Susan Collins is already in trouble and polling low. I will be thrilled to see her and Mitch McConnell leave DC forever. I’ll do everything I can to send these bastards home

Are you sure they leave forever? Many come back as lobbyists.

It's insanity that they are not interested in calling witnesses. Bolton keeps talking, and his book is going to come out. They will try to rationalize their votes, but it cannot be done.

My husband hasn't been in the United States very long, and he is shocked and dismayed by this legal process. He keeps asking, "how could they not call more witnesses?" And he keeps saying, "Americans don't care. Americans don't care. I was wrong for thinking this country stood for something, and Americans stood against corruption."

They called 17. If they think they needed even more, maybe they shouldn't have been in such a rush to impeach?

I hope to elect peoole who are actually anti corruption. I believe we need to overturn Citizens United, and that would solve a lot of the problems with corruption and lobbyists

I am tired of people spreading misinformation. First of all, Trump is blocking people from testifying. Secondly, Bolton specifically wanted to testify but did not want to defy the WH. He was always willing to testify, but expected a court ruling first. The court ruled against the WH. Bolton is willing and able, but the Senate blocked it.

And if you’re going to criticize the house for rushing impeachment, where is your criticism for the senate to rush to acquit? What the senate has done is an absolute joke.

Maybe the Republican Senators shouldn't conspire with the Trump administrator to cover-up Trump's corruption?

Well, sorry that the justice system doesnt work on the Resistances timetable.

The timetable the judicial system places on things is WORSE for the Republicans. The Supreme Court is going to hear the McGagn and Trump Tax/Financial cases in march, and will likely the rulings on those cases in the spring/summer of 2020. The Trump administration will very likely lose these cases because of the extreme, unconstitutional legal positions they've taken.

The bad news likely generated from the information the Democrats will acquire as a result of these rulings will come out in the summer/fall of 2020, before the general election.

The reason why Republican Senators are conspiring with Trump to conduct a sham trial and prevent witnesses from testifying is that the information these witnesses have is very, very bad. Otherwise, the Republicans would just get it all over with now.

The truth will come out sooner or later.

Yet another word you guys throw around so much as to render it meaningless.

McConnell clearly fears he has overplayed his hand, or he wouldn't be doing this. He knows the optics of "the first impeachment trial without witnesses" is terrible for headlines, and is definitely going to anger independents that wanted a serious trial that was about evidence.

If the Democrats are smart they'll force a censure vote. This is the one setting where they don't need to overcome a filibuster.

Agreed, that will be the only possible way Republicans can come out of this and be able to look any honest person in the eye...

McConnell broke our country, and now he knows it

The Democratic Party's Progressive Prophets Of Doom continuously declares we are in the end times as it always does. Only by doing, thinking, saying, and acting exactly how they allow only - and give the all you have - can save us from certain imminent destruction.

Yet another word you guys throw around so much as to render it meaningless.

Why don't you give us your definition of corruption and then tell us why Trump's actions do not amount to corruption?

Sure. And maybe you can impeach him all over again :screwy Every time you guys shoot at this guy and miss he gets stronger and you get more unhinged and angry. Might be time to abandon this unhealthy pattern of stalkerism and try to get something done for the American people

If new, compelling evidence is uncovered, which is likely, I think this would definitely be a good idea.

The problem isn't the people investigating Trump. The problem is Trump. Trump is the one who keeps doing unconstitutional and corrupt things.

I think it's time Trump supporters stop supporting a corrupt President. How about that?

You perceive this trial as not working out well for the Democrats. This is not true. The House Democrats will continue investigating Trump.

Also: before the trial, Americans knew Trump was probably guilty. After the trial, Americans now know Trump is probably guilty and that the Republicans became co-conspirators in covering it all up.

This will not end well for the Republicans in the long term. Yes, in the short-term your Republican friends may have succeeded in covering it all up, but the truth will eventually come out.

You live in a bubble. There was no cover up. Thats just you repeating what the talking points of your masters. The House democrats failed to convince anyone. They ran a shoddy, half-baked, partisan investigation and they got exactly the outcome they deserved. It was your team who blew it here but you are too partisan to ever admit it.

The way I understand it is that Democrats could carry this out forever with amendment requests that McConnell couldn't stop so he probably made a deal with Schumer on the timing of the final vote, throwing Democrats a bone in return for getting this thing over with.

Yes, I believe that's it.

Just as in the first day, the House could continue Amendments as nauseum, as they demonstrated. I believe they could do this for 60 hours, which is roughly translates to 5 days and how we got to Wednesday. So it looks like the House fought tooth & nail using every tactic available. Good for them! That's what we voted for them to do.
