McCarthy withdraws from speaker race, vote postponed

I very much agree with you.

He handed Secy Clinton a political 'get out of jail card' for many Dems & some Indies that might otherwise like her except for all her controversy.

If Rep McCarthy accepted the Speakership he would be under her spotlight continuously and under continuous attack, while publicly tainting the narrative the GOP have spent two years developing.

I'm completely blown away that a guy who's supposed to be the sharpest guy for the top GOP & House leadership position could say something that stupid & politically damaging.

It was a career changing amateur move.

i agree with everything you say except

a guy who's supposed to be the sharpest guy for the top GOP & House leadership position

imo he has the intelligence of an ice cube....but then i have been wrong a few times

The Republicans have a platform? Who knew.

They have one. It's stupid, but they have one. They need to do more than "God, guns and hating Obama".

Unfortunately though, I believe Rep Gowdy's fate for the election year is fixed: the GOP needs him in his current position leading the inquiry into Mrs. Clinton - it's too late, I believe, to withdraw & replace him, and I also believe the Spkr position would not afford him the ability to still chair the inquiry.

Gowdy's ability to cut through a witnesses BS is definitely handy to have on that committee, but I think it is better used as a counter to the White House.

He could have never made that Reid-style comment and his troubles with the English language should have sunk him.

I honestly think that Boehner picked idiots for leadership roles so that he would never feel challenged.

I think Boehner picked idiots because he liked being around his own kind.

Your assessment is accurate. McCarthy is Hank Johnson levels of stupid.

I think it's purely ideological, they don't want another Boehner in there; and he ****ed up with the Benghazi committee. Gowdy is done with him.
*bolded for relevance

Absolutely.

Imagine the anger Rep Gowdy must have after the GOP spent two years beating Secy Clinton down to the point they see her in a wounded and vulnerable state, and just when Trey Gowdy is about to execute the prosecution he's researched & planned for nearly a year to attempt to deliver the final blows, the new Speaker discredits him & the investigation!

Amazing!

Utterly amazing!

The GOP made a decision here (in part) to continue making the investigation their 'crown jewel' of their election strategy, protecting it and attempting to keep it unblemished.

I think the email server would be a better issue, but the FBI is handling that. Gowdy got handed a job and I think he's trying to do it.

Fair enough.

But I think the GOP are firstly focused on attaining the White House, and they see the inquiry committee as the 'crown jewel' of their political tools to succeed.

All is lost, if there's a strong & popular Secy Clinton.

[as we can see, she's already slipped substantially, and I'm sure the GOP would like to perform a 'coup-de-grace' upon her - the committee is their method of her beheading]

For every "successful" politician, there are at least three other, brighter, tougher, more sincere, dedicate in the garbage heap of "what was I thinking?" Saturday, I am having lunch with an old friend who I beleive could have been prime minister of Canada. He never got beyond Parks board becuase of one comment; "They can't skate". It's a long story.

Another, who I feared and loathed, a woman scholar who studied at the London School of economics, off the scale IQ, who was prime minister for 100 days and made the following statement: "An election is no place to be addressing economic issues"

It was of course seen as elitist, and being I was on the other side, piled on with clever rhetoric to sink already flotsom campaign, however....if you think about it, she's right. In the atmosphere of personality charged politics, does anyone really think they are going to get a clear idea of the dynamics and where the country stands?

One of the ironies of politics is that we demand 'truth' from our politicians, so that it can be immediately spun; before we know there is no flag on a state house, the riot is over, laws are passed, lines are drawn, issue 'resolved." But, when a truth emerges, yes indeed the committee has reduced her chances, that's true....but he can't say it.

In my years I have seen a lot of transitions of leadership, mayors, reeves, MLA's, MP's, premier's and prime ministers....and you don't get "better", you get different. The next guy will be just as criticized as the last, but for different stuff. Likely because US politics is no longer about record; no one can say 'look, we're making headway on illegals, we've reduced the flow". Decisions are made on, well looks, reputation and the most recent glaring headline, even though that headline may be disguising the best prime minister the country ever had.

"they can't skate" was an overheard joke about roller bladers on the sea wall walk, it was splashed as a headline in a weekly; so along with being independently wealthy, good looking, a trophy wife, a phd in something he had a sense of humor, told what really was the truth of the issue, and never saw the public life again.

I was wondering about that. Can he step back into a role he said he quit?

Probably, I guess. I'm sure he is crying.

Boehner's leaving Congress, not just the speakership, so I doubt he'll backtrack.

Here is the key operative language in this particular news bite:

"Boehner said in a statement he will remain in his post until a new speaker is elected, though he has yet to announce the date for the new vote."

Looks like good old Boney is here to stay for a while !!

How funny !!

And as crazy as it sounds, it's been the Obama administration that's been letting out these emails and taking other actions against her, all in a slow continuous 'drip, drip, drip', making it nearly indefensible on her part in terms of politics & PR.

So much so, that I wondered if the President is setting her up for his Veep pal to get in?

If I may ask -- why? I guess I just don't get his appeal.

I've been a fan since I first saw him over a decade ago on Forensic Files. I started to do some research, then found myself following his bid for Congress. He's smart, well spoken, fiscally conservative, and generally an appealing person, IMO anyway.

Most think he is because he can't stand Hillary.

Damn this is FUN to watch, The GOP, who loved the TP in 2010 and 2012 because of the absolute hatred the TP showed towards Obama is now helpless as it watches the TP monster it helped build devour its GOP master.

There's a problem when they start to eat the own kind.

Interesting stories - thanks.

And to add: What I think really sinks candidates, is not just any actions or words, but actions & words that fit their negative narrative (irregardless of whether the narrative is true - it may simply be political typecast by one's opponent)

To wit:

- Gov Romney's '47%' remark.

- Rep Mc Carthy's 'political motivation'.

I was about to agree with this. You're suspended! Hurry back...hope it isn't a long one.

As for your post, you are correct. He won't back track on that. He will leave Congress as planned. He just has to remain Speaker a bit longer than expected.
