Major League Baseball 2019

I notice that the NFL, even a crap game like the one last night, gets far more attention than the World Series. NBA opening day even got more ink than Game one of the WS.

Makes me wonder why.

When I was a kid, baseball was king. Now, I bet it cannot even compete with soccer.

World Series Game 2 Falls to All-Time Low TV Audience

Apart from the relatively niche markets of the two teams, other networks have no interest in hyping Fox's broadcast product.

About 69 million tickets to MLB were sold this year. How many did major league soccer sell in the USA?

From the stats I have seen, major league baseball sells as many tickets as the NFL, the NBA, the NHL and major league soccer combined.

Not to shabby for a dead sport with no following.

Yup. That's me. Season is now a success because the Yankees have been eliminated.

I don't keep up much with MLB, but those few Yankee fans who behaved so terribly got my attention. Sincere question I've been wondering about for a week: If the Yankee players made plain their strong disapproval of behavior such as mocking Greinke for his social anxiety disability, would those fans modify their unsportsmanlike behavior? Or are there always a few jerks irrespective of the team, so this should be expected?

There is no reason to signal out Yankees fans. In football, for example, I have seen fans celebrate when a player gets seriously injured. One example, I saw fans throwing popcorn at a player just tore his ACL when he was being carted off the field.

It depends. The Baseball WS game had higher viewership than the Lakers Clippers game but you have to look at demographics.

Baseball does really well with the age range 50+ They do really poorly with the Millennials and Generation X.

Baseball lacks APPEAL to the coveted Millennials and Gen X demographic. They just find more appeal to football and basketball.

There are many ways to generate more fans like have female cheerleaders in baseball but it does not seem baseball knows how to market well.

In crowds that size an aberrant actor or two cannot be avoided.

The article showed fewer than 12 million viewers. That is horrible.

The secret to the Nationals' enviable clubhouse chemistry: They really do like each other.

Addition through subtraction?

Did Harper really suck that much air out of the locker room?

Is Martinez just that much better a fit as Manager?

Some from column A, some from column B?

Whatever it was, it didn't exist the first third of the season.

(And no, it wasn't some assistant Astros coach saying something about women. :lamo)

Harper actually had (and still has) cordial relations with the Nats.
The addition of Gerardo Parra "Baby Shark" made quite a difference, as did return of players from injury.
Martinez has grown as a leader.

I've been saying this for YEARS.

I think about 30 years ago the MLB owners, players, network execs, Umps, etc. all got together, had a meeting and talked about how can they kill the game of baseball.

I know I'm being facetious, but seriously some of the things they've done and the decisions they've made over the past few decades have gone a long way to killing the game.

It hurts too. I used to love baseball. Now, I cannot watch a game all the way through to save my life.

I'm old. I've been a fan since 1962. I'm hooked and will be until I die. I still like the game, and honestly 75% of the time I rather listen to it on the radio/At Bat app, then watch it on TV.

BUT I can understand why so many people nowadays want nothing to do with the game. Especially sitting there and watching it on TV as it drags on for 4 hrs.

Or why they don't want to go to the game and spend a b'zillion $'s on beer, food, parking, tickets, etc. Of all the major sports it use to be a nice bargain day out for a family. Now? Damn, got to take a loan out.

Radio was always my favorite way to enjoy a game. I'd spend hours studying while listening to ball games in the background, especially playoffs. Later in life, I would listen while driving. But, now, I rather leave the radio off and just spend the quiet time to think.

The Nats impressively retooled this year. Suzuki and Gomes at catcher have solidified and elevated a key position they’ve struggled with during this decade. Corbin and Sanchez were outstanding free agent pickups. Nats aren’t shy with their $$$.

Every team has injuries, but the Nats are mostly healthy right now, and quite hungry. Their bullpen has come around, and Rainey could be the real deal in years to come. Their bench is very good, with Kendrick, Parra, MAT, Dozier, Gomes and Adams for tonight. Cabrera is starting at 2B.

Both pitchers are batting 9th, which I Don’t favor. I like the 9-1-2 thing in later innings. Tony La Russa did that, as an example. Most here don’t care for my discussion of betting lines. I started grade school on Air Force Base schools right after Sputnik, so numbers are in my DNA.

I use MLB Las Vegas Sportsbook Odds, Baseball Sports Betting Lines and Run Spreads at VegasInsider.com.

Good to see you in what is a refuge thread for me.

Nats catchers: I still have my Wilson Ramos shirt. Loved the Buffalo.

4-1 Astros in the 8th. I almost clicked.

Decided to comment and go to bed instead. I'll find out if the lead holds in the AM.

Houston woke up...4-0 after five.
