As to joining Canada, I like Canada, but per-capita GDP and incomes are much higher in the United States than Canada. Citizens of the poorest states in America have more disposable income on average than citizens of Canada's wealthiest provinces. I work in tech and looked at moving to Canada a few years ago. Even in the wealthiest cities there, I would take a 40% pay cut, and I am not coming from the Bay Area, I am coming from the Midwest. Moreover, housing costs are much higher there than in the USA.
Yep, because Canada is much more economically progressive than the US. All of those awful policies quickly add up.
