Looks Like Brown leaving No 10

From The Evening Standard:

Gordon Brown is set to resign and allow David Cameron to be Britain's new Prime Minister, Evening Standard learns.

The Labour leader's final desperate attempt to cling on to power with a Lib-Lab deal crumbled amid a rebellion on his own side and policy disagreements with Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg.

-- they will wait till the morning as the Queen apparently does not like --

She's a fan of Eastenders. Luckily for her, the BBC are delaying the broadcast till the news quietens down.

Anyhow, apparently the deal between the Libs and the Tories hasn't been sealed or agreed, Nick Clegg hasn't been back to his party to ratify whatever deal they propose so my betting is we're heading for a minority Govt till an agreement is put in place for a coalition.

Couple of commentators felt the Lib Lab agreement wasn't going to happen as both sides publicly paraded malcontents while the Tories have been pretty solid in their unity.

David Cameron due at Downing Street in 15 minutes.

Was debating myself which to watch so made it easier.

maybe but I have been hearing of 6 cabinet seats for the Liberals. I think a minority might be more interesting. I have been hearing Cameron has had to promise more right wing Cabinet posts.

SIX?

I really can't see the Tory party standing for that. The BBC commented that there might be a post for Clegg but nothing more has been speculated on.

It's still clear that at 20.30 the coalition will be put to the Liberal Federal executive for approval. They've all been caught with their trousers down by Brown's resignation - however Ed Balls has been on saying that it became clear through the day that the Lib-Dems were going to support the Conservatives and no agreement was possible with the Labour party.

We'll know soon enough...

I have listened to Sky and the BBC and just heard it while I was possibly doing something else. However I found this

Yes I know it sounds mad. But I have been told that the deal with the Conservatives has been sealed. It will be announced with in the hour. Liberals have SIX seats in the cabinet . Really? I know that sounds bonkers .. but SO BONKERS , from such a good source, it just might be true! After all I saw The PM resign and the Tories offer the Libs a referendum on electoral reform yesterday! Anything could be true.

Liberal Vision Blog Archive Libs to get 6 seats in conservative cabinet!

I think Brown is much more relaxed and comes over much better now he is not PM and yes, he obviously just thought no point in staying on any longer..let them get on with it.

Good. It's the most democratic decision on his leadership position he seems to have ever made. He would have ramped up the hatred against both him and his noxious party even more had he stayed on despite being the election loser, something the Public wouldn't have forgiven and refused to understand.

BROWN'S RESIGNATION IN BRIEF:

I couldn't get away with it. The Bigots will have to do without my strong, decent, wise, insightful and poignant leadership now. Democracy, has, I'm afraid, beaten the man who once mastered it in arrogant Labour triumph.

Still, one thing that puzzles even me - why did I even want to rule a land, people and culture so hated by myself and other pure Reds?!

I prefer the comments in the article. Far less bull:

Shame he didn't have the guts to stand up at PMQs as leader of the opposition, and justify his abysmal legacy.

RoP you neglected this comment made by Dickens Jeeves who wrote:

So there he goes.. a pious speech being the mother of pious speeches! The sheer hypocrisy -

a) lying, cheating and hoodwinking all and sundry to remain in power for the good of his party and himself - not us;

b) sending our lads without proper equipment or training to be slaughtered by the Taliban - no apology there!

c) having all of us now to be subject to pornographic scans of our bodies each and every time we board a plane;

d) empowering councils and god knows who else to snoop on us and punish us with anti-terror laws when he promised that it would be never used for these purposes;

e) inflicting stealth taxes upon us - the mother of all which is the highest fuel prices in Europe (with 90% of that tax) when we are oil producers;

f) backing Teflon in his lies to get us into Iraq where we slaughtered and displaced over a million Iraquis in the guise of getting WMDs and bringing democracy to their country (when we have never had it!);

g) tarnishing the good name of our country by being complicit in the torture of innocent people 'suspected' of being terrorists;

h) backing Telflon when he abolished grants for students leading to widespread debt for our kids;

i) .. do I really need to continue?

Here is a man who has never had to earn his living - from the ivory towers of university then to politics - now sitting comfortably on a nice pension and a good living in consulting in information gained from his Office which we had to pay for!

Total disgrace.. he should be tarred and feathered and banished to Scotland where he came from.

5 posts including Clegg as Deputy Prime Minister. Possibly 22 further positions in Govt - practically HALF the Lib Dem MPs to serve within the Govt.

Staggering figures.
One thing struck me last night, Heseltine was commentating on events as they occurred and he reminisced on being deputy to John Major and how he felt it was crucial that "you couldn't get a cigarette paper between the two men when it came to policy."

This will all be very different now, will Cameron make sure he is never away for PMQs? Clegg has a volatile party behind him with many Liberals that just don't like the idea of a pact with the Tories.

You know, I will say one thing about Gordon Brown - I always loved to hear the sound of his voice while I watched the PM's Questions on C-Span every Sunday night.

....Suppose so - if the noise of a whining self-obsessed egomaniac trying to justify and divert attention from his every failure floats your boat.

But never mind, even that's not as bad as the sound the fat sod made when he'd arrogantly gloat about the rare perceived victory at the despatch box!
