I come from a working class Eastern European background. Leftists used to love us. We had lousy jobs. The company security people shot at us when we went on strike. Leftists saw our discontent as fuel for their fire.
Karl Marx promised us a paradise through the inevitable revolution of the proletariat. The proletariat was my people.
In the end, though, we didn't show up for the Marxist happily ever after. They wanted us to give up our religion and our ethnic distinctiveness and join the international workers, but we didn't adopt the IWW flag, we adopted the stars and stripes and held on to our values. "Property is theft" said the communist motto, but no one is more house-proud than a first generation immigrant who got his slice of suburbia.
So leftists turned on us. It's not just ancient history. In 2004 What's the Matter with Kansas? spent eighteen weeks on the bestseller lists. The premise of the book: working people are too stupid to know what's good for them, and so they vote conservative when they should be voting left. In England, the book was titled, What's the Matter with America?
And so we became the lefts' boogeymen. Joe Sixpack, Joe Hardhat. Though we'd been in the U.S. for a few short decades when the demonization began, leftists, in the academy, in media, and in casual speech, blamed working-class ethnics for American crimes, including racism and the "imperialist" war in Vietnam.
Leftists freely label poor whites as "rednecks", "white trash", "trailer trash", and "hillbilly". At the same time sanctimonious leftists forbid a reciting of the "n" word during a reading of Mark Twain.
The left's visceral hatred of poor whites overflowed like a broken sewer when John McClain named Sarah Palin as his running mate. Attacks on Palin became so egregious that leftists themselves begged that they stop because they gave the left a bad name. One of them said that it came as a "major shock" to find that many leftists hate working class people so much.
Leftists are still looking for their proletariat to manipulate, which is why they are in favor of uncontrolled immigration. No doubt, those new immigrants will turn on them, too. But in the meantime the uncontrolled immigration is killing America's working poor, probably more a feature to the left than a bug.
