Largest study to date finds powerful evidence that gun control actually works

As the US continues to stall on gun control talks, the largest study ever conducted on the topic has found a clear link between firearm regulation and fewer gun-related deaths around the world.
https://epirev.oxfordjournals.org/content/38/1/140.full

Until now, studies on gun laws have been limited to just one city or country, and have failed to reach consistent conclusions. But the new research took a broader view - the team reviewed 130 high-quality studies conducted in 10 countries over the past 60 years. And while they stopped short of saying they've conclusively proved that gun restrictions equal fewer deaths, the research provides pretty powerful evidence to suggest that it's the case……………

“……….. After analyzing all of these studies, the researchers came up with three conclusions:
1.It usually takes major legislation overhaul - not just one new law - to see significant change.
2.Restricting access to guns and their purchase is associated with reductions in firearm deaths.
3.Individual studies need to be better executed and planned in future to get more convincing results………..

“…………. But it showed that when countries pass several laws at once that worked together to overhaul the country's firearm code, gun-related deaths tended to decrease.

Santaella-Tenorio told Beauchamp that these overhauls generally included:
•Banning "weapons that are actually very powerful", for example, automatic weapons.
•Implementing background checks.
•"They all required permits and licenses for purchasing guns," Santaella-Tenorio told Vox.

For example, in South Africa in 2000, the Firearm Control Act contained all these measures, and saw a 13.6 percent reduction in firearm homicides every single year for the next five years.

Guns are responsible for more deaths per year than traffic accidents. But this study proves the number killed looking down the barrel of a gun can be reduced significantly by passing several - common sense - laws at once that worked together to overhaul the country's firearm code, gun-related deaths tended to decrease.
Such an initiative would not violate the 2nd Amendment right of gun ownership and go a long way to bring the “gun community” into better standing with the rest of society ……….
How could anyone be against reducing the number of Americans who die at the hands of a gun?

The first bolded above conflicts with the 2A. By adding a requirement to take classes, pass tests and pay fees that converts an individual constitutional right (to keep and bear arms) into a mere state issued privilege.

Thank you for providing a link to the actual study. I would suggest you read the study and read the findings of the individual studies. I think you will find that predominant number of studies found very little association between firearms control laws and a reduction of homicide, crime or suicide or accidents.
In fact.. a number of studies found a correlation between a firearms control law an a INCREASE in homicide and suicide.

The conclusions they drew are based more on their manipulation of the statistics by weighting certain studies more than others.

Another food for thought.

Lets say that you are right and this study is right. that gun control IS a major factor in reducing crime, homicide and suicide.

If that was true. Then Mexico should be a utopia of peace and way less violent than the US since its gun control is much more stringent than it is in the US. In fact there is only one legal gun store in the whole country.
But its not. Now.. I would guess many on the "pro gun control" side of things would claim... "but but but... you can't compare the US and Mexico because they are so different economically, demographically etc".

Well.. the truth is EXACTLY why scientifically they should be compared. Because in that way you control for confounding variables. Since mexico has gun control but is not significantly safer.. it can be concluded that gun control is not an effective method and it must be the other differences such as economics that are a factor.

Another good thing is to compare other countries with significant gun control differences. Canada for example and Germany boast significantly higher rates of gun ownership and less gun control than say the UK. Yet their homicide rates are either the same or in the case of Germany significantly BETTER than the UK.

The first bolded above conflicts with the 2A. By adding a requirement to take classes, pass tests and pay fees that converts an individual constitutional right (to keep and bear arms) into a mere state issued privilege.

So what you think is a "violation" of 2nd Amendment right ( which it is not) is more important than saving the lives of approx. 6500 lives yearly. Can that be true?

You are wasting your time, gun banners do not care about anyone else's Rights, but if you read though the "stuff" they posted you will see what they consider "reasonable" gun controls and laws, all pure BS.

I will stand with/by the study's findings.................common sense regulation and safety measures save lives without violating the right to own a gun

There are no GUN BANNERS...........it's a myth created by the NRA to boost membership revenue to pay for their high salaries and perks.............You should take a look at their Form 990 and see how they are making suckers out or yall

More lives would be saved by keeping those deemed so dangerous that allowing them to (easily) buy a gun must be made very difficult by simply keeping those known to be dangerous convicted felons locked up. Many more lives would be saved with a national speed limit of 10 mph but that inconveniences too many voters to ever pass.

You should actually look at the study. The author Fiona Macdonald from Science Alert that you linked seems to have drawn her own conclusions from this study because the study doesn't say much of what she said.

So what you think is a "violation" of 2nd Amendment right ( which it is not) is more important than saving the lives of approx. 6500 lives yearly. Can that be true?

Banning smoking, drinking, bacon, or cars would each individually save even more lives annually, so it's clearly not about trying to save lives.

So, what IS it about?

I would like to ask a question.

Just what IS it about gun deaths that make them so much more horrible, more noticeable, and more politicized, than non gun related deaths? Why are gun deaths something worth fighting over, politically, but diabetes, or heart disease, isn't?

Would we not save far more lives by passing restrictions on who can purchase bacon, and when, and how much?

Common sense gun control DEFINITELY works.

If you have a nice, clean draw that naturally lines your sights with the target, control your breathing and squeeze rather than jerk the trigger you'll find that you have much better control over where your rounds go and that, after all, is the real intent of "gun control".

Certainly.. I would stand by that to as would the NRA. There is no doubt that not allowing 6 year olds going into walmart and buying a glock just like chewing gum has an positive effect.

However, if you were to read the individual studies that your study references.. you will find that the majority of studies found no effect from things like background checks, or restrictions on what firearms to use etc. And a few studies did find a positive association.. the association was not statistically significant. This results of the study come from manipulating the weighting of the various studies. Finding no association is not weighted as heavily as finding a weak association in the way its statistically handled.

There are other major problems but that's a large one.

Yeah.. you should live in NEW YORK or California.. and then you tell me their are "no gun banners".

When you run into politicians that tell you publically .. "I think all guns should be banned" , then you would realize that there are gun banners. Diane Feinstein admitted in 1995 on 60 minutes that if she "could have gotten 51 votes in the senate for an outright ban, picking up every one of them, I would have done it"

I'm afraid you cannot just wish away the Second Amendment.

Nothing here has any nothing to do with anyone's 2nd Amendment rights.............as Heller allows...reasonable rules and regulation can be enacted by the government......and if it is proven it saves lives......... I am for it................ And you are not? ......not a very sound and/or tenable position to hold

Are you aware most gun deaths come at the hands of your average law abiding citizen............and not criminals!

So, what IS it about?
Restricting alcohol would save exponentially more lives as well. Hint: It is only about saving certain lives...

No, but that may be so if suicides and accidents are counted. What form of gun control would keep guns out of the hands of your average law abiding citizen?

I doubt your opinion as to what does and does not impinge on the 2A is definitive. Any attempt to go where you want to requires a confrontation with the 2A. I'll respect the effort that is honest about that.

gun control works as intended-to harass lawful gun owners and impede legal gun ownership

as to crime control-its a joke
