As of 48 hours ago, few people knew that Kentucky was the nation’s leading recipient of federal largess, and certainly had no clue just how much the state received compared to the rest of the country. Then, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Republican from Kentucky, started whining about “Blue state bailouts,” and the **** has hit the fan.

Kentucky’s gravy train is now in danger, thanks to Mitch McConnell’s heartless greed

What needs to happen is Congress only give federal money to states that have their own tax base to pay for their infrastructure. Lets see these rural red state yahoos run for office with no federal dollars coming in to their states, and their schools, roads, safe drinking water, and critical infrastructures collapse because they don't want to tax their millionaires and businesses in those states.

I'm sorry, did Mitch McConnell or the State government of Kentucky ask for Federal tax dollars to bail out the Kentucky state pension system prior to this?

The State governments are responsible for their own government pension systems for their own employees. If you have an argument as to why the Federal government and taxpayers from other states should be the guarantor of the state employee's retirements, I would like to hear it, skews13. Because if that is the case, shouldn't the Federal government manage state employees pensions?

I prefer the way the system as it is - now that millionaires and billionaires from California and New York are finally paying their fair share of taxes.

Kentucky is a taker state. They take more in taxes than they pay out. California pays more in taxes than they take in.

California pays Kentucky’s way. Not the other way around. The blue states need to cut the red states off, and let’s see how well they fare in a few months.

You can be quite sure that the millionaires and billionaires from anywhere are not paying their fair share of taxes. The lower middle class taxpayers got hit with the bill.

Enjoy your time freeloading on the blue state tax.

Amen to that!

Then you won't have any objection to Cali diverting the money it would normally be handing over to KY and using it to tamp down our pension debt here instead. Tell Mitch he can go pound sand.
And make that apply to ALL blue states, by the way.
No more pitching in to Washington at all.

You will have to take it up with the Internal Revenue Service. The California State Franchise Tax Board does not tax us and send a cut to Washington. Those are taxes we pay as American citizens. Not citizens of California.

But I congratulate you on becoming a fiscal conservative in your later years, Checkerboard Strangler.

Red State, Blue State, Purple State . . .

Against a national average of $1,935 in intergovernmental spending per American, red states receive just $1,879. Blue states get considerably more, at $2,124 per resident. Purple states see the least of their money returned to them per capita, at just $1,770. Measured in this way, the blue states are getting quite a bit more than the red or purple.

Are Red States Tax Takers And Blue States Tax Makers?

Seems the Blue states are getting more federal dollars per capita. That being the case then it appears that the Red States are subsidizing the Blue states.

The lower middle class pays little to no federal income tax.

The lower middle class pays little to no federal income tax.

They do pay more as a proportion of income on payroll taxes than do upper middle class.

Define lower middle class?
Less than 50k per year or thereabouts. I'm sure you can find an exact definition somewhere.

I don't require an exact definition, was wondering which group you were speaking of. I'll change my reference to "middle class", that's a group that got hit with a tax increase in many states.

Why would they ask for it when it was simply given?

What, there's some vast ideological gulf between the feds funding their pensions and the feds funding their roads?

The question is not who gets the most per capita. but who pays in more than they get back and visa versa. The blue states as a whole pay in more than they get back from the Feds and on average the Red states get back more than they pay in. So, you are wrong, the blue states do subsidize the red states and have been doing so for years. I hope you can understand the concept here?

does that have anything to do with the massive amount of military in Kentucky? lots of blue states have tons of wealthy GOP voters, and lots of "red states" have democrats sucking on the public teats.

Narrowing it to state pension systems is not a fair analysis. It would only be fair analysis if the system failed in normal times. They are only failing because of COVID. Things that fail due to COVID should be propped up. And on top, you know McConnell is doing that only because it's red states. Hence the OP's ruminations on the amount of blue state tax dollars that feed into red states - the ones who call blue states "takers", like McConnell is so dishonestly doing now - and how hypocritical it is for a red state leader, McConnell of all, to use this excuse to undermine blue states.

Otherwise, to reflect your question from elsewhere back at you, what is the point of being the United States anymore?

What is the point of being a single country if red states take what they can, but when they are in sufficient power in DC, stop blue states from getting their due?

I'll have the sleight of hand combo, please.

The only way it works is if you assume the GOP actually cares about its constituents for their sake. They do not. They only care about constituents for power's sake, and a state like MA is never voting red. So what does McConnell care?

PS: one of your entire premises is self-defeating. "lots of blue states have tons of wealthy GOP voters" is hopelessly irrelevant, since wealthy GOP voters are not going to be affected by a pension going bust, now are they?

PSS: So does another. "lots of "red states" have democrats sucking on the public teats" is completely irrelevant in the time of Trump. Someone who is willing to vote Democrat is simply not going to vote for such utterly corrupt and incompetent scum.

all those words and not any relevant responses

"who gets the most per capita" is exactly the measure the author of the cited article uses in his comparison.
