A federal jury has awarded $100,000 to a Kentucky couple who sued former county clerk Kim Davis over her refusal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Davis, the former Rowan County clerk, drew international attention when she was briefly jailed in 2015 over her refusal, which she based on her belief that marriage should only be between a man and a woman.

A jury in Ashland, Kentucky, awarded David Ermold and David Moore each $50,000 after deliberating on Wednesday, according to lawyers for Davis. A second couple who sued, James Yates and Will Smith, were awarded no damages on Wednesday by U.S. District Judge David Bunning.

Bunning sent Davis to jail for five days in 2015 after holding her in contempt of court. She was parodied on Saturday Night Live and embraced by conservative politicians who traveled to Kentucky to support her. Davis was released only after her staff issued the licenses on her behalf but removed her name from the form. Kentucky’s state legislature later enacted a law removing the names of all county clerks from state marriage licenses.

Bunning ruled last year that Davis violated the constitutional rights of the two couples. In the ruling, Bunning reasoned that Davis “cannot use her own constitutional rights as a shield to violate the constitutional rights of others while performing her duties as an elected official.”

I wonder what “Mrs. Sanctity of Marriage” is doing now. Hope she’s making enough to pay that $100,000. 😂😂

White evangelical is just another word for ignorant bigoted hypocrites. They think that their religious beliefs get to determine the rights and freedoms of everyone else. It is people like her and those who abuse kids, that conservative Christianity currently has the approval rating of herpes. Jesus wasn't a bigot, but he only matters to them on Chritmas and Easter anyhow.

Religious belief has far too much power and it needs to be pruined by 50% in the US for the rtights and freedoms of everyone.

Slavery was legal once upon a time. So were something called the Jim Crow laws. My point being just because something is "legal" doesn't mean it's good or right.

Same sex marriage is not good or right.

You are free to believe that is isn't good or right.

You aren't free to deny people a marriage license because you don't believe they deserve it.

Demonstrate how same sex marriage is not good or right without appealing to a book of mythology.

If you want to appeal to a book of mythology, objectively prove is it correct first.

Someone here once wrote that the people who hid Anne Frank were breaking the law and the ones who turned her in were obeying it.
Same sex marriage is not good or right.
Subjective. Doesn't mean it should be illegal. Lots of stuff that I call 'not good or right' is legal and I wouldn't change it.

Well said.

Yeah, well, you know, that’s just, like, your opinion, man.

And your opinion is fine. Still, it cannot be the law of the land because it is an opinion of some.

Thank you. I have a very low tolerance for religious hypocrites and people who try to use religion to rationalize bigotry and abuse. That is 95% of my family.

Mine too, sis. Most of my family is Uber religious. I’m just the black sheep and that’s ok too.

What is your determination to make that moral or secualr decision?

Your omniscient and omnipotent deity made people LGBT. If she doesn't like LGBTQ people then he should stop making so many of them. She could do that but she doesn't. This marriage is entirely secualr and has nothing to do with any religious sacrament. They aren't asking for your approval, nor its it wanted.

Too ****ing bad. She shouldn’t have broken the law.

Let her figure it out.
My sister is the kind of wack-job who sees Jesus in trees and grilled cheese sandwiches. She attacked my Dr once because she thought that by doing that I would go back to church and pray to get better instead of getting medical care that I needed. She is nucking futs and an alcoholic.
The scary thing is that she is also a social worker who works with abused kids.

What's wrong with it?

Too bad the government will pay instead of the homophobic clerk.

I would surmise that Davis's legal team will appeal to see if it makes its way to SCOTUS.

Would love to know who is paying for her legal team.

Dollars to donuts, there’s a Huckabee involved.
