Jesus was not a refugee

Yes, he did flee his country, as the bible says.

If you're intimidated by reading it for the first time, there are a lot of good Children's Bibles that have a lot of pictures n' stuff.

I would suggest some basic understanding of the definition of "country."

I just find it ironic that someone that claims the Bible is a fairytale only uses verses when it suits his position.

By your definition. Those that left New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina to Texas and elsewhere. Are they considered refugees?

Not applicable.

Mary and Joseph fled Judea because it was under Herod's rule. Egypt was not, so Herod had no authority over them.

Yawn. You're conflating 'country' with 'empire'.

That wouldn't happen if you'd just read the bible for once.

I love threads like this, you don't need read more than the thread title to know the thread starter is a hypocrite trying to justify his hate.

Yes, we should all waste our time reading the bible.

This country has really gone to hell.

It was bad enough when you folks were in teh closet but now, good grief, it's horrible.

You do realize even the United States does not recognize all people fleeing political violence/danger as a refugee.... right?

No, she marks catholic on the census form. Two different popes have outright said that socialism in incompatible with church teaching. She also is pro-abortion, and best I can tell rejects all moral teachings of the church. I don’t get the impression she’s actually among the faithful

Were those the same two popes who felt okay with Catholicism being okay with fascism?

Well I imagine socialism includes the national SOCIALIST German workers party

No popes ever endorses fascism either

Egypt was never under Herod's control. That is why Joseph and Mary fled to Egypt with their child Yeshu.

When the threat from Herod was over, the family returned to Judea and settled down in Mary's village of Nazareth.

I'm not even a Bible-thumper and I know this stuff.

You got your ass kicked the last two times you tried to paint Nazism as being liberal, by something like seven different people in the same thread if I remember correctly.
And yes, the Catholic Church bent over and allowed Hitler to make them his bitch.
That ought to teach you not to point to popes as heralds of virtue and spiritual sanctity, but just like your fever dream of weapons grade historical revisionism about the Nazis, I am fairly certain you will return to visit the popes again just as a dog returns to visit its vomit, because that's what you do.

Actually, people are getting caught up in country, empire, etc. but the origins of the word "refugee" don't make such distinctions.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/origin-and-meaning-of-refugee

The concept of refugee is one that flees from persecution, violence, etc. It has nothing to do with citizenship; it was intended to identify someone who fled to a place of safety.

Since Herod did not have ruler ship in Egypt, MJ&J were fleeing to get out of his influence to a place of safety.

This book you linked is a lengthy opinion piece which has largely been discredited.

"You folks"?

You might want to reread this thread so you don't look the fool.

"I have changed my mind about Hitler, it is for the first time that such a government voice has been raised to denounce bolshevism in such categorical terms, joining with the voice of the pope."
Pope Pius XI, who preceded Pius XII.

Negotiations were conducted by Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli, who later became Pope Pius XII (1939–1958). The Reichskonkordat was signed by Pacelli and by the German government in June 1933, and included guarantees of liberty for the Church, independence for Catholic organisations and youth groups, and religious teaching in schools.

"The agreement", wrote William Shirer, "was hardly put to paper before it was being broken by the Nazi Government". On 25 July, the Nazis promulgated their sterilization law, an offensive policy in the eyes of the Catholic Church. Five days later, moves began to dissolve the Catholic Youth League. Clergy, nuns and lay leaders began to be targeted, leading to thousands of arrests over the ensuing years, often on trumped up charges of currency smuggling or "immorality".

Largely, by two people. Yeah..."largely". :lamo
Pius XI and XII both bent over for Hitler.

In point of fact, Pius XII's antisemitism was such that even my own PARENTS were not allowed to be married INSIDE the church itself. My mother, an Italian Roman Catholic immigrant to America who fled Mussolini, wanted to marry my father, a German Jewish refugee who fled Hitler, then returned as a US soldier to fight Nazis.
But they had to conduct the ceremony in the VESTIBULE, and then only after special permission from the Papal Nuncio, which was rejected twice, then finally granted after my father was decorated as a war hero.

Pope Nicholas V condoned slavery of Pagans in Africa. Pope Gregory I said Slavery was infatuated with slavery. Thomas Aquinas thought slavery was an acceptable punishment for heinous crimes. I could go on all day about the list of crimes that Popes, and the Catholic church have commited against humanity but I know you wouldn't care to read it.

Ok, so what you’re saying is in the early thirties when Hitler and workers party were a legitimate government that hadn’t yet carried out any crimes against humanity an agreement was made with the church, which Hitler broke and caused a riff and that’s your evidence of cooperation with Fascists?

Not a very strong case.

And yes at that time... really at any time let’s be honest but especially before the war the communists were far worse then the fascists. This is during Stalin’s rise to power, murderous purges, mass starvation etc and the Holocaust hasn’t yet happened

Slavery isn’t fascism and at the time those popes wrote slavery was universally accepted amongst all human societies. So what? Are you saying enslaving someone for a heinous crime is wrong? I view that as secular discretion.

And in what way is this relevant to Ocasio Cortez claiming a religion she doesn’t follow?

LOL! I don't need people that are a. Not Christians, b. do not read the bible. and c. Do not attend church to lecture me on biblical facts.

Actually, you will often find that the people you describe above know more about the bible than Christians.

From your link:

What were they if not refugees?

As for your assertion that she is not a Christian, on what is that based?

She’s Catholic.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexandria_Ocasio-Cortez

Yes, Jesus and his parents were outside their country of origin, and unable or unwilling to return to it due to a well-founded fear of persecution based on his membership of a particular social group, “Jewish children of a certain age (was it under two?) targeted for death by the government”. Therefore they would meet the definition of refugees, much as many of the migrants from Central America might. In two days, the 28th, assuming Ms. Cortez is Catholic as stated here, her religion celebrates the feast of the Holy Innocents, whose deaths at Herod’s hands have often been depicted in art.

LOL! I don't need people that are a. Not Christians, b. do not read the bible. and c. Do not attend church to lecture me on biblical facts.

I'm

1. A Christian

2. Read the Bible

3. Attend church

and I agree, you're behavior is anti-Christian. You're behaving like a cultural Christian. Someone filled with the Holy Spirit would be filled with mercy and compassion for the poor and immigrants.

"And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt." --Deuteronomy 10:19

You do know that one day you'll see Jesus and you'll have to answer for your attempts to twist the bible to fit your views, right?

It's not that complicated, you were shown mercy so now you must show mercy. Or you can continue to support hate.

I support border security. I don't support demonizing poor desperate people for doing what they need to do to improve their lives. Trump and his supporters will have to answer for this:

Matthew 25 said:
1 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
