Stunning rebuke by Mattis:

James Mattis Denounces President Trump, Describes Him as a Threat to the Constitution

In an extraordinary condemnation, the former defense secretary backs protesters and says the president is trying to turn Americans against one another.

--

James Mattis, the esteemed Marine general who resigned as secretary of defense in December 2018 to protest Donald Trump’s Syria policy, has, ever since, kept studiously silent about Trump’s performance as president. But he has now broken his silence, writing an extraordinary broadside in which he denounces the president for dividing the nation, and accuses him of ordering the U.S. military to violate the constitutional rights of American citizens.

“I have watched this week’s unfolding events, angry and appalled,” Mattis writes. “The words ‘Equal Justice Under Law’ are carved in the pediment of the United States Supreme Court. This is precisely what protesters are rightly demanding. It is a wholesome and unifying demand—one that all of us should be able to get behind. We must not be distracted by a small number of lawbreakers. The protests are defined by tens of thousands of people of conscience who are insisting that we live up to our values—our values as people and our values as a nation.” He goes on, “We must reject and hold accountable those in office who would make a mockery of our Constitution.”

“Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people—does not even pretend to try. Instead, he tries to divide us,” Mattis writes. “We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership. We can unite without him, drawing on the strengths inherent in our civil society. This will not be easy, as the past few days have shown, but we owe it to our fellow citizens; to past generations that bled to defend our promise; and to our children.”

The complete statement is at the article's bottom.

No doubt this thread will soon be filled with "RINO!", "Deep State!" "Never Trumper!", all the usual stupid dishonesty deployed to defend defend defend. The simple fact of the matter is that honest people of all political stripes see Trump for exactly what he is, with only his cult tirelessly defending him.

Remember folks: the ugliness is the point.

The usual suspects will just call him a deep stater now.

The complete statement is at bottom.

Trump reminds me of Obama in a lot of ways.

The cops were stupid.

If I had a son, he's look like Trayvon.

Trump is a klutz and Obama was a divider.

What a moronic deflection. Every single thing Trump does is aimed to divide. It's his management strategy. All you manage to cite is two missteps by Obama (and unlike Trump, he apologized for his missteps). That's why people who did not describe Obama with disgust are describing Trump with it, even people on the right. Actual Republicans that is, not Trumpists in elephant's clothing.

But then, I knew the usual suspects would show up to deflect and derail with blather, whattaboutisms, and all the usual brown noise.

Re: Mattis speaks truth about Trump

Mattis shows lots of courage in taking this public stance against Trump. Let us hope nearly every responsible person will do the same between now and Novembers election.

LOL....moronic even! Oh my!

Coming from the man who loves to complain about ad hom's.

Your thread is about division, and it was your intention from the start.

Liberals need and crave confirmation bias from their peers.

Obama left the country in a better condition than what it was in, in JAN 2009.

I’m not thinking that will be the case in 6 months or four years and six months.........

From what I have heard this is light and late........

Re: Mattis speaks truth about Trump

Leadership is learned and Trump has never looked up to anyone for anything. He has no idea what leadership looks like. It's getting so pathetic I wish there would be some kind of, a little bit of, redemption.

Re: Mattis speaks truth about Trump

They've been calling him that for a while now.

Hard to keep track at this point. I think it's best to assume that anyone who dares to criticize Trump is a member of the "deep state", even if they were previously Trump loyalists. I even had a poster the other day attack Tucker Carlson because he actually dared to criticize Trump.

This unraveling presidency began with the Crybaby-in-Chief banging his spoon on his highchair tray to protest a photograph — a photograph — showing that his inauguration crowd the day before had been smaller than the one four years previous.

The whole conservative movement has turned on Trump.

Then you have George Bush's message about COVID-19.

And George Bush's message about the riots.

Then you have the Lincoln Project, a group of conservatives that say Trump has to go.

Does anyone in the republican party still stand by Trump?

That was a pretty intense explanation of how he feels about Trump. Lets hope this is just the beginning of many of our cherished leaders, military and civilian, speaking truth to power.

Now go ahead Trumpster Divers, how are you going to spin that?

I love General Mattis and respect him completely as a military leader. I have and would follow him as a leader into the gates of Hell. However...this letter reads as personal.

He is 100% correct in that peaceful protests are and should be allowed. The proposed use of military is not to quell protests but rather the looting and rioting and anyone that would claim that the number of lawbreakers is 'small' is deliberately attempting to steer a narrative into a political attack.

I don't expect the O/Poster to see the irony in his own divisive commentary.

Mattis has a right to his opinion.

Honestly, I don't see Trump nearly as divisive as Obama when it comes to stoking racial tension in the country.

Re: Mattis speaks truth about Trump

That may be true - but his remarks are welcome and insightful. Anything that exposes the fascist fraud Trump wants to be is a good thing.
