James Comey Says Joe Biden Should Consider Pardoning Donald Trump to Allow U.S. to Heal

I'm sorry, but the best way to heal a nation is to serve justice starting with the very top. I was shocked when hearing Comey speak these words last night. o_O

James Comey Says Joe Biden Should Consider Pardoning Donald Trump to Allow U.S. to Heal (newsweek.com)

President-elect Joe Biden should "consider" pardoning President Donald Trump to allow the U.S. to move forward, the former FBI director James Comey has said.

Comey said it was right to impeach the president and that it would be "good for our country" if he were removed from office before Inauguration Day, but that when Biden takes office, he should look at granting clemency to Trump "as part of healing the country."

I disagree with the former FBI Director. The insurrection incited by President Trump—a self-coup attempt—is so grave that the costs of leniency vastly exceed the benefits of leniency. A pardon would demonstrate that even a direct assault on the foundation of the U.S. constitutional framework by a leader whose obligation was to safeguard it can be accepted. That would send a dangerous signal to extremist groups, some of which played a role on January 6.

I think what Biden should do is do a review of everyone who has been charged with crimes related to the Capitol attack, see if there are any people who really appear to be good people and didn't do anything too horrendous like attack an officer or anybody else, and pardon those people. I think that would say more than pardoning Trump.
Biden has a lot more important things to do. We have agencies who are already assigned that task and will continue to do their jobs into the new administration unless ordered otherwise. Sometimes 'good people' do 'bad things'. By no means should they be excused. If anything, they should be held up as examples of weak-mindedness, being susceptible to suggestion, 'should have known better,' etc and be held up as examples of what everyone should be on the look out for. "What could happen to anyone."

In any case, those enforcement agencies are already doing their jobs and neednt waste more of the new president's time.

I didn't mean to suggest Biden himself would review. I also don't feel particularly strongly about this particular proposal. But making some sort of effort at outreach is not a waste of the President's time, it will arguably be one of his most critical and important tasks.

Did you hear his speech tonite? It was all about outreach and unity, what he's proposing for ALL Americans. I'm sure he'll respond in kind even more on Jan 20.

Pardoning gross offenders is not in anyone's best interests, safety or otherwise, and you dont condone terrorist actions just to mollify the opposing faction.

He'll have to follow words with actions. I think he probably will try, because that's who he is.

I totally agree; nobody said anything about pardoning "gross offenders" or "terrorist actions."

Watch James Comey get booted from Twitter now.
Private companies can boot whomever they wish. Conservatives should celebrate their freedom.

Stop with the "both sides" do it BS. This is about a bunch of autocrats trying to seize power when they lost an election. The one term mistake has been leading us to this for his entire term. He is the most lawless President in history. They way to reduce the temperature is to ban Trump from seeking public office ever again.
What I'm talking about began 30 years ago with Trump as the end result, not the symptom. Now I'm use to partisans always stating it's not my party., it's the other party. I expect no less.

Pie in the sky. There is no way Biden will pardon Trump. What I would like to see is an amendment passed barring the pardon process altogether. There is no reason in the world why this power should be granted to any president. All the time, money and resources used to put criminals behind bars should not be frittered away because these criminals kissed a president's ass. Ridiculous

Did he say clemency or pardon? A pardon is clemency, but there are more clemency options than a pardon.

Pretty sure you have to be charged with a crime before you can be pardoned.

The pardon reads...this pardon is granted for any and all federal crimes which may have been committed prior to this date

Sadly, Mr. Biden does not have the guts to pardon former President Trump.

If he did, the Dems would go crazy & impeach him.

Comey's a nice man, but his judgement sucks.

Angling to get similar treatment when he's convicted by Durham
Counting eggs and calling them chickens again, I see. Durham's "conviction" will be any minute now, along with Hillary's. But cling to your shards of hope by all means. They're all you've got.

This country is way too divided political for any healing to take place. It's divided due to all the negative personal attack ads by both parties which paint the other party and its candidates as this nations number one enemy out to destroy the country. This has led to our modern political era of polarization, divisiveness and mega, ultra, high partisanship. This has been building up for 20-30 or more as each party portrays their opponents as the most evil scumbag on the planet earth. Sooner or later members of each party will begin to believe that portrayal.

Until each party stops this, stops their divide and conquer strategy to win elections, pitting one group of voters against another, trying to get the voter to hate the other guy more than they hate you, there will be no healing and having no healing lay at the door of both major parties and both parties leadership. To heal, both sides must want that, not just one or at present, none. We have to get back to the long ago past political era where both parties respected the other, when both parties knew the goal of each was a successful, free, prosperous and secure America. The paths might differ getting there, but each knew the goals were the same. We need to get back to substance in our elections and campaigns, present new ideas, possible solutions to our problems and a vision of the future. If not, we're only destroying ourselves from within.

As for Trump, let the chip fall where they may. No pardon. Trump is an end product of the above, not a symptom. There'll be more of his ilk in the future, unless we can return to a bygone political era and throw this modern era of politics, the polarization, the divisiveness, the mega, ultra high partisanship out the window onto the trash heap of history.

If not, both major parties are leading this country down the road to destruction basically holding hands in so doing.
I agree actually. It's almost impossible to have a united society when our very means for electing a president pits one group against another and relies on big money to do it. Both sides hold responsibility, we have set up the divide as a means to secure a leader with huge stakes behind each side.

This needs to change before we can ask either side to be the bigger person. I don't see how it could end well with our current process. There is bound to be panic.

Each side tells the other how horrible their lives will be under the other. It's definitely not a surprise we are at this point.

You cannot pardon someone for inciting a coup unless you want others to try it in the future

James Comey has lost his mind on this one.

I disagree with it never being allowed, but there absolutely does need to be some serious Constitutional restrictions made to it. Can't pardon self. Can't pardon for blank or blanket crimes/criminal behavior. Have to specify. Cannot pardon family members or anyone who has worked within your administration (however, allow for the next administration to do so). For certain crimes, can only pardon after conviction, such as murder or high crimes or war crimes, and perhaps require a nonpartisan (as best as possible) review panel that agrees (at certain percentage) to the pardon. I do believe Presidents should still have the ability to pardon some, especially smaller federal crimes, but we have to have some limitations.

Exactly. Try living in Georgia leading up to the runoff senate elections. Over a billion dollars were spent on those 2 senate seats. You couldn't turn on TV without being bombarded with negative personal attack ads telling us how much of an evil scumbag their opponents were. I went three weeks without turning on the TV until the election was over I got so sick of all those ads.

The sore point with me is most of that billion plus dollars came from out of state. Out of stater's were buying Georgia's 2 senate seats. I got to where I didn't give an coyote's howl who won, I just wanted it over.

I'm continually amazed that Comey rose to be the FBI director because you need a political nose in addition to professionalism, and he has repeatedly shown himself to never have any political sense at all.

We really need to update our process. That is ridiculous. I have had to tune out for similar reasons. I feel ya.
