'It's Okay to be a Unicorn!' - Children's book causes stir at Ohio school

'COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — It's a book about learning to be yourself and loving who you are, but it's sparking some controversy in a local school district. Some parents told WSYX that the book was given the boot at a Buckeye Valley Local School District — about 40 minutes from Columbus, Ohio — because some thought it could be promoting a gay lifestyle. The issue is getting a lot of talk on social media and some are shocked that a book about a unicorn is at the center of the brewing controversy. ...WSYX got several tips that some expressed concern the book was promoting LGBTQ issues and would not be allowed to be read to kids.

Michelle Mauk— who actually works for the district — was shocked the book would spur a debate. “Is highly disappointing because there’s absolutely no reason for it,” Mauk said.

...WSYX reached out to the district and was sent the following statement: "Buckeye Valley Local Schools has not banned the book 'It's Okay to be a Unicorn!' by Jason Tharp. Mr. Tharp is still scheduled to do his author visit today at our BV West Elementary building, and he is able to present his message to our staff and students. All student artwork will be displayed."

..Mauk told WSYX that district administrators are back-tracking after the backlash. “That was not a decision that was made in this building. That was a decision that was made somewhere up that chain and no one wants to seem to take credit for that,” Mauk said.'

I understand the concern with this book. Kids who become trans or gay are kids who don't feel they fit in, and will identify with the unicorn. This book is essentially grooming kids to become trans or gay.

Kids who don't feel they fit in, for whatever reason, can always turn to their parents or their pastor to teach them to fit in.
Talibornagains, wanting to destroy everything before they die off.

This is social engineering!

How dare fictional animals talk and tell each other it is okay to be themselves? Everyone knows that is impossible.

If the book had burning bushes, angels, and giants, it would be based on historical events. Talking horses is too much.

Stop socially engineering children altogether and let them be kids. School systems don't need to be in the business of herding, moderating, or guiding their thoughts and feelings.

Stick to educating them on curriculum. It appears the problem is they'e incapable, since public schools are turning out illiterate dummies who can't solve math problems, read, write or pass a basic test.

Get over yourselves. It doesn't take a village. Nobody wants your stupid village.
At this rate there will be nothing left for them to read. How exactly is reading children a book about loving who they are detracting from their education? Should reading books to kids be removed from classrooms entirely?

We should make our kids stick to the classics like The Little Prince and Gulliver's Travels....

It's a very simple issue here. Does the book promote or introduce sexuality to young children or not?

If the book is as it was presented by the author, just a self help book for children who don't fit in well with other students, then I'm all for it. There's nothing wrong with a book that's attempting to boost the self confidence of children who need it. If the book introduces or uses sexuality as part of the story, then I understand why parents would object to the book being read or given to young students. That would be inappropriate and as far as I'm concerned, a form of indoctrination.

To me, that's the entire issue in a nut shell.

p.s. if the only objection is it's use of rainbow colors in the story, that doesn't qualify as "sexuality" as far as I'm concerned.

Clearly this book indoctrinates young impressionable minds to burn with lust for horses. Gay horses.

My God - SANTORUM WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG

Republican cancel culture and hate for free speech strikes again.

You don't "become gay"....

You don't "become gay"....
Speak for yourself. I read the excerpts posted and now I'm gay. I'm looking for a good leather shop, I'm crushing on Freddie Prinze Jr., and I feel an urgent need to hire a decorator. Crap! Stupid book.

Do you feel the same about indoctrinating kids with religion and creationist nonsense, because plenty are doing that to their children?

key point... THEIR children.

I don;t care about the book, necessarily, unless sexuality is explicitly defined in some way, which is inappropriate at a young age, but Schools should not be in the business of worrying about how children should feel about social issues, and get back to teaching actual CLASSROOM subjects ONLY.

if the parents want junior to read a book about one thing or another having to do with social issues, more power to them.

Then homeschool your children instead of sending them to the village school. You can't claim to not be coparenting with the government when you send your children to be taught by the government.

The problem is that THAT is all you're focused on.

I'm for education, not social engineering. Children need to be educated, not coddled, cuddled, and molded into a unicorn.
Every metric known shows us trailing at least a dozen other nations.

‘It's Just Isn’t Working’: PISA Test Scores Cast Doubt on U.S. Education Efforts
What international test scores reveal about American education
New Test Scores Show U.S. Students Continue to Trail Global Peers in Reading and Math

Guess what? ^^These are all left-leaning news sources so can't cry about it to your Unicorn.
And what do those studies show is the reason for us trailing? Are all those other schools refusing to ever read books about unicorns? Are they refusing to coddle or be warm and pleasant and open with their students?

There has never been a single moment in the history of US public schools where "classroom subjects only" were taught. Schools have ALWAYS been involved with morals, virtues, etc.

Don't believe me? Head to your local high school's next sporting event and tell us about the prayer that happens before the game. Is it a Muslims prayer? A Hebrew prayer? Maybe a Buddhist chant?

Most parents don't give two flying shits about what's going on in the classroom until Tucker or Hannity or MRC or Infowars screech LOOK WHATS HAPPENING IN THIS ONE SCHOOL, YOU WONT BELIEVE THE INDOCTRINATION!!!!! and the parents assume it's happening everywhere. Too many people kvetching about the books being used, or curricula, etc. haven't stepped foot into a public school classroom in 20 years.

That's pretty much the whole premise of Luca too. The metaphor can be interpreted in many different ways.
