Fantastic news coming out of Illinois today.

Assaulting a worker who is enforcing face mask policies can now be prosecuted as aggravated battery in Illinois – a felony charge.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a law Friday that expands the definition of aggravated battery to include attacks against a retail worker who is conveying public health guidance, such as requiring patrons to wear face coverings or promoting social distancing.

"It's clear there is still an even greater need to get people to wear masks – especially to protect front line workers, whether they’re at the front of a store asking you to put on your mask or whether they’re responding to 911 calls to save those in distress," Pritzker said in a statement.

Time to deliver some justice to those who terrorize people who are just trying to save lives.

The stupid part is there are so many anti-maskers who assault workers that this law is needed.

Was assault not already a felony?

Used to be we could all go around beating retail workers for a lark. Leave it to a few bad apples to ruin the fun for the rest of us.

We are worried about face masks but not about riots, looting, stealing, burning and assualt related tot he riots in American cities. More liberal craziness.

It used to be a simple battery charge, now its an aggravated battery. from the OP link.

"A simple battery charge is considered a misdemeanor and can result in up to a year in prison and fines up to $2,500. An aggravated battery charge, on the other hand, is a felony that can result in a sentence of up to five years in prison – or up to 10 years depending on factors such as the individual's criminal history – and fines up to $25,000."

We can thank the Buffoon in Chief for that.

It should be a felony everywhere to assault anyone.

A governor with guts. Good job, Illinois. Lead the way.
Pritzker has done so many things right with the pandemic, that I lost count. Failure to personally wear a mask is not just mandatory escalating fines, but includes a misdemeanor option on the third strike. For businesses, one mask violation is a temp suspension, while three strikes is mandatory license revocation.

He don't mess around

But the best thing: he listens to the universities. And it largely worked.

It actually is. It's called 'battery', and battery is almost always a felony here in CA. There are certain elements to be met, but it's not hard,.

Happy solution: do not lay hands on anyone.

Obviously a first time felony, unless there's extenuating circumstances, would likely get pled down. But it's still a big deal, and should make people think.

Yes, but by tying 'mask related offense' with 'mandatory felony', will make a specific lasting impression on the general public.

I've been following some of the goings-on in California, and I'm beginning to think the infection explosion may not have been as much with Newsom, as with Californians' leniency.

I would think assaulting anyone for any reason other than self defense should be a crime.

Can you show me any quote where the president told anyone to assault someone for trying to enforce mask wearing? If not, I guess we can chalk this up to hyperbolic buffoonery.

Virtue signaling by the Illinois legislature. It's already illegal to assault someone in Illinois.

I'm old enough to remember when people were told not to wear masks. That was 5 months ago.

Yeah, but this is like those hate crime enhancements. It makes it extra-illegal.

Assault wasn't already a felony in Illinois? A little behind the times, aren't they?

This is a court decision waiting to happen, after some Wal-Mart clown thinks this deputizes them to assault a patron for not wearing a mask.

It was a base misdemeanor. The now makes it an aggravated offense, and mandatory felony.
