I have a theory---I feel one of the reasons for the Male female disconnect stems from us being separated from each other in Middle school. In Elementary School, we all play together, and in my day, had recess together. So we understood each other, out side of a class room setting. ---but in Middle School, we are separated from interacting with each other, other than class rooms. This continues through high school. We have separate Gym classes. So while we are going through puberty, we are kept away from each other. Then after High School we meet in a different setting. but no longer know each other, in the same way that Kids know each other, from years of playing together. We are now "Grown up" ---so we then start playing roles. we try to act like we perceive the opposite sex will find interesting, instead of just being our sweaty selves. We are like sexual strangers in a sense. and it's that way from then on.

I don't think so. In both my Junior and Senior High Schools, gym classes, lunch, and even sex ed. classes were co-ed.

So you have not experienced the same separation of the sexes, that I have. --Yet you don't think so, interesting.---wait, am I understanding your statement right?? Maybe not.

I was never was gender segregated in anything other than the locker room at school. Of course I somewhat segregated myself on the middle school playground, as my primary hobbies were football and magic cards.

Besides the Gym class separation(which makes sense, no?), I have not experienced any of those gender separations that you speak of.
I do think however that I understand what you are talking about.

To me, you were saying that the separation of the sexes was commonplace. My comment was that it wasn't. When I was in school, I knew of no schools in my area that separated the sexes as you indicated. All I was saying was that your experience was not the general experience that I saw.

Same here. I was educated in the US and Israel. I never experienced gender segregation in either country. Just the locker rooms and the johns.

Gender separation may have its upside if it encourges adolescent kids to focus more on scholastic endeavors and less on puberty-related obsessions during school hours. ;)

Are there any studies anyone is aware of that show if separating the sexes has any specific influence on scholastic performance? Just curious.

Same here. While it's been a long time since I was in school, we never had any kind of gender segregation at all, except in the locker rooms and the bathrooms. I can't recall a single occasion where they said "boys over here, girls over there".

Something tells me you've got the tiny exception instead of the rule.

You're forgetting to factor siblings into your little equation. A boy who grows up with several sisters will get an excellent education on what girls are like outside of a classroom setting.

Well that sure explains a lot, and thank you. It was ignorant for me to assume all Schools were the same. I have only experience with Houston Schools.---Maybe it was the religious climate of the the day, and the time I grew up in, that played a part in sexual segregation.---Well, I spoke with a Lady friend, about my age, right after I posted this, and she agreed with me. She grew up here also.---so it may just be a local thing.---but since I'm on this topic, were Boys required to swim Naked in Middle School, where you went to school?? We were required to swim naked, and any infraction of pool rules, would get a leather whistle lanyard across our bare bottoms. --I often ended up with several per session. --And did Coaches watch as everyone showered in gang showers??---Just curious here, and evaluating what they did to us back in the early 60s. might explain how many of us turned out. Looking back, I thought it was kind of creepy.

None of what you said happened in my schools. There was no swimming classes, but there is no way students would have been required... or even allowed to swim naked. If a teacher "watched" a student shower, he/she would probably have gotten fired. And corporal punishment of all kinds was not allowed.

You attended a very different school system than I did.

I'd have to look, but my recollection is that students in separate sex schools tend to do better academically. However, a confound may be that the only separate sex schools tend to be private schools, so more valid results would be hard to come by. It does make sense, though. Less focusing on the social aspect of dating and connecting with those of the opposite sex would be one less academic distraction, and a big one at that.

Good god yes, I went to the famous boys only school,Benders Abbey, the Head Master Willy Dubois believed gals were a disruptive influence, the only female on campus was Ms Tessa Tickle who wore tweed, smoked a cheroot and had to shave more frequently than the Gym Teacher, she was my first unrequited love

We did Ballet dancing on Thursdays, I still miss my pink Tutu.

Ive turned out OK.

Wow - it certainly sounds like the school you went to was run by a bunch of perverts!

I go to an all-male boarding school, and the only time we are officially naked is in the showers. No teachers are watching us shower, and I think if any teachers hung around in the showers, he would cease being a teacher in a short time. The prefects occasionally look in to stop too much horse play, but they are just senior boys.

Anyone who went swimming naked would be considered a major weirdo, and probably get detention if he persisted in doing that.

Both my school here, and especially Winchester, have top academic records, but I dunno if this is because there are no female students, or because they are very expensive schools and can afford top teachers. I am inclined to think the latter.

I would like there to be chicks at my school, because it is very difficult to meet girls, when you are only allowed out on the weekends. There are only two females at school - matron, who is like 50 - not out, and our German language teacher who comes in three days a week. So I can't agree that separating sexes is a good idea (but my mum thinks it is a great idea - she must think she has reared a rapist, or something.)

Nah- your mum just wants you to have a good chance at succeeding before you get some pretty little girl knocked up.;)

I think the sexes ought to be separated for periods of time--say half a day--in school.

Let the girls be girls and the boys be boys for a spell.

Well - I wasn't separated from my boyfriend in Science class and got knocked up on the lab-bench.
There are reasons for gender-separation the older they get.

However, I feel that there's significant proof that classroom separation of the sexes is key to successful learning - and joint classes such as music, art, gym, etc, should be joint.

Seperate but equal is inherently unequal as they say. The only reason I can think to segregate men and women is to spare women the atrocious state of the men's bathrooms :rofl

I just brought this up in the transgender thread. I don't think the government should recognize biological sex at all. Everyone should be treated equally. This means unisex bathrooms, co-ed locker rooms, etc. Separating people by sex is discriminatory against hermaphrodites.

I personally thinkg that the reason for the male/female disconnect stems from disproportionate levels of testosterone and estrogen.;)

Well, it seems my School System was either out of step, or out of time with what most folks School experience were.---I just assumed as a Child, that Schools were the same everywhere. It seems that is not the case. ---and yes, to me, they all seemed like perverts, and sadist. They could draw blood with those leather straps.---Oh, this was the "Houston Independent School District"---Public School---now I'm a little pissed.

I believe there should be more separation by gender. The sexes are different by nature, and each needs to develop its own identity. Particularly, young men are at a distinct disadvantage in our syrupy, politically correct, estrogen saturated society.

I beg to differ, both young men and women suffer extremely at the hands of the current unattainable standards which society sets upon them. Separation only engenders distusts and ignorance.

It looks as if we are in disagreement on that subject.
