There's a lot of talk about a Voice to Parliament. Here's what it is and who's for and against it
We break down everything to do with the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum.
www.abc.net.au
Australian's are going to the poll to vote on the addition of an Indigenous Voice, a powerless advisory committee to represent the Indigenous peoples of Australia.
The referendum working group advising the government says the design of the Voice will be guided by the following principles:
- It will provide independent advice to parliament and government.
- It will be chosen by First Nations people based on the wishes of local communities.
- It will be representative of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
- It will be empowering, community-led, inclusive, respectful, culturally informed and gender balanced. It will also include youth.
- It will be accountable and transparent.
Essentially, in an effort to address over 200 years of genocide and economic and political repression, Indigenous peoples are being given a powerless bureaucratic body to "advise" the government of the day at a local, state and federal level only about "indigenous affairs", which, surprisingly, doesn't include the land and resources stolen from them.
A better alternative to the Voice is what I like to call the Israeli model, where Indigenous Australians are armed and trained to take their ancestral lands back from later settlers, so as to secure them against the threat of genocide and ongoing repression.
