Imagine if during the 14th century, Kings found out that the plague was carried by rats/fleas and they mandated that every single person go out and kill a rat every day and burn them in giant piles. Then imagine that there was a group of people, dying left and right, who refused to do this because it was considered an attack on their liberty. Two things would have happened, one the King would just kill them on the spot and spare them the possibility of being killed by the plague OR the plague would have got them sooner or later and our gene pool would have been the better for it. Since we do not ever take the first option, the second one looks like the likely outcome of these peoples actions.
