Well that is that theory that there is a 50/50 chance they are hostile. Might as well spin the cylinder on a revolver with 1 bullet. At least the odds are only like 16% there.

But they could be aware of the issues that meeting has for the locals as well. If they are so advanced as to understand that. We could even gain knowledge from them too. Look at Japan with the European interactions. Advancing several hundred years in technology by having the right understanding of it.

We already have been contacted, at least as early as Ike's administration. Other governments are also aware. Yes, the public has been kept in the dark, perhaps with good cause. Cognitive dissonance is so strong in some humans that they could never handle the knowledge. It would blow the proverbial 50 amp fuse.

Yea actually. Constantine and the Tudors both used government. You realize that in the past 400 or so years government is the driving force for keeping people in line? Not religion. You certainly don’t pay your taxes because God said to. Neither do I. First, they cover it up. Then make all efforts to conceal the encounter from all other governments/nations/people. Then they start developing, in coordination with the extra-terrestrials, new technology such as integrated circuitry, stealth capabilities, kevlar, etc.

Of course everyone should know.

And a worldwide program then put into place to establish contact and (hopefully) two way communication.

An alien species will not be hostile- it makes no sense. If someone has the technology to get to the Earth, there is literally nothing they would want to ‘take’ from us, other than potentially knowledge about our society.
