Trump is an extrovert, who can be personally kind to people he perceives as friends. He is still an authoritarian who is willing to send U.S. citizens to gulags in El Salvador. Those are not mutually exclusive things.

I recall a story about the Roman Emperor Vespasian. Vespasian was known to be likeable, fair-minded, and witty. He was also less cruel than his predecessors, in general.

Once a Cynic philosopher insulted him on the street. And the emperor simply said, “Oh well, after all he’s a dog.” It was a funny remark because to everyone familiar with the incident the guy insulting Vespasian sounded like a barking dog. And Cynic in Greek meant “living like a dog.”

I am not a scholar or anything, so please forgive me if I am mistaken, as I have only a passing familiarity with Roman history. I'm just a regular dude who likes to read. But a lazy search on Google reveals that the person Vespasian was most likely playfully mocking was named Demetrius.

Demetrius was eventually banished from Rome.

And Trump may very well do the same to rest of us, just like Vespasian did to Demetrius, and this will happen no matter how personally charismatic Trump may be. At the end of the day, Trump is an authoritarian thug who does not believe in our Constitution.

I took some selected polls and looked at the percentages of the responses and it came out to about an 80/20 split. Of course anyone on the 80% side would biasedly think that it is more like 50/50.
