I may need an antidepressant.

When you are depressed, getting out of bed can be a challenge. Exercise is not something many depressed people are going to be able to motivate themselves to do.

I was on Zoloft for awhile, didn't seem to do much for a long time except make it hard to sleep and hard to ****, and I sweated alot. Then one day driving into town, I noticed that I was not feeling bad. It was really intense because feeling bad was such the norm for so long. Soon as I noticed it, all the usual bad feelings washed back over me. It was really, really really horrible when that happened.

Depending on the four letter cuss word the reader infers, the meaning of your post drastically changes....

When people can't poop, the tend to sweat a lot...

Oh, I could poop, and spent a whole lot of time doing so, and it was not fun.

Probably talking about sex. Most antidepressants decrease libido and can in women prevent orgasm (and erection for men). They can destroy your sex life.

I've been feeling blue for a long time. It's not severe but Ive had what I believe is anhedonia for a few years. What's an anti-depressant that isnt severe and doesnt take weeks to work that wont make me poop myself or get stomach cramps or feel like a zombie? I want to say Xanax, but I'm worried about addiction and withdrawal. Im not sure if this is the appropriate forum for this =\I dont even have the energy to engage with people in discussion on DP and post.

You need to see a doc. Only he can answer these questions safely. Hang in there. I feel your pain.

how old are you?

this is a very important question.

not funny. this person may be a minor and we could get into serious trouble giving such advise to a minor.

Don't forget -- that dyke from "Perverted Justice" might be watching us.

What's that cologne you're wearing?

We are not selling him drugs... and he is in college, so it's ok!

Weed can be good, yet its too unpredictable for me. I used it to self medicate for several years and haven't bought in about 2 years.

Are there prescription antidepressants with notoriously few side effects? Because I can't take the side effects of most of them, Id rather live and wait for the circumstances of life to change and hope for change rather than deal with the effects.

I think most anti depressants have side effects, but some will have less affect you less. It depends on the person. You just have to determine which one you think is best for you, and try it... start with a small dose and increase it as needed.

From what I remember talking to the psychiatrist, finding the right med is kinda an art, as all have some level of side effects, and finding what works good for each individual without the side effects making things worse is trial and error. I was put on Zoloft, then could not sleep, so was given an additional one to help me sleep, that did not work, so we went to another one, and about then I decided **** it I was tired of being on meds.

It seems like Zoloft was the main one they tried, and that was probably 5 to 10 years ago... I remember the commercials were really really common too, but they advertise so many other meds now. I never met anybody that said Zoloft really helped them, not saying nobody likes it... but I never liked it either. It did nothing for me.

Wrong. Anxiety can worsen ones' depression. If that is the case, reducing the anxiety will reduce the depression.

Do Antianxiety Medications Help Treat Depression? - ABC News

Wrong. Here's what you said:

If anxiety is present along with depression, and it often is, an anti-anxiety medicine can help reduce your depression

We were talking about anxiety... NOT IF anxiety is present along with depression. That is a different conversation. Do NOT change the context of the discussion. Also, your link discusses the combination of issues, not anxiety alone.

With our original discussion, I am correct. Xanax is an anti-anxiety that does NOTHING for depression.

I never said it was a cure for depression. There is no cure for chronic depression.

And the link I posted says that many people with depression also have anxiety, and taking anti-anx drugs can help with their condition.

Wrong. Here's the quote:

In the short run though, when a depressed patient has severe anxiety so severe they may not be able to function during the day or sleep at night, it can be helpful to use a small amount of an antianxiety medication. Usually we use these only for about two or three weeks to get somebody started on the antidepressant, and then after that they're able usually to do without the anxiety medication at all.

Notice. The anti-anxiety is used for the severe ANXIETY symptoms. Once the anti-depressant kicks in, since the anti-anxiety is no longer needed as it does not treat the depression, it is discontinued. If the anxiety remains, it would not be discontinued. It is solely used for the anxiety symptoms. NOT for the depressive symptoms.

i know of people who while on their meds they are almost entirely cured of their depression and anxiety.

I'm not sure cured would be the correct term. Remission would be more accurate.

Sometimes the side effects are worse than the depression or the symptoms... It really depends on the person. Everybody tends to say that using a medication and going to therapy is the best form of treatment. You could even try therapy first, and then decide on medication.

Going to therapy first is the way to go. You might find that therapy alleviates the distress enough that you do not need medication.

Is xanax really addictive? I think I have heard of people abusing that... Also, is that a medication you can take on a daily basis or is to control severe anxiety attacks and flashbacks?

Xanax can certainly be addictive and people don't abuse it. You CAN take it every day, but you must be careful because one can built a tolerance, which would start the addictive process. It is better used as an "as needed" medication.
