How did thirty years of talk radio impact our politics?

Transaltion: Libruls resent alternatives to the the mainstream media. They want everyone force fed what to think.
One cannot force people to think, but one can offer information and analysis in the hope that more people think about issues with more perspectives to consider, and with more depth.

Alternatives are good, but not all alternatives are good quality.

You prove my point. You don't try to disprove what I said. You immediately attack me with a silly label when I am a moderate. And then go on to describe what "they" want to do. Argue the positive aspects of talk radio.

Why waste time disproving a far left opinionated rant? You obviously resent alternative views. You are no moderate.

It would be wonderful if there were a national movement against this kind of stuff. If people were to simply stop watching or listening, maybe they would get the message and tone it down.
Unfortunately the neurochemicals their messaging is designed to produce are quite addictive. But tolerance develops so it takes more and more stimulation to get the same buzz.

Moderate is irrelevant to what is ethical (moderate murder, for example).

Talk radio, Rush, Levine, Savage, convinced the working man that tax cuts for rich people were in the working man's best interests.

"Trickle down economics" it's called.

Ask your friends and family about trickle down.

Talk radio combined World Wide Wrestling with political talk. It made heroes out of republican politicians who were far from heroic and demons out of democratic politicians who were far from being demons.
And don't forget Gingrich.

The Gingrich period is one of great study as it changed our politics fundamentally.

As is the internet. I just got an alert!

Swing, you sound like a good person for me to ask this, but why is it that liberal talk radio isn't as successful as conservative talk radio? I have no motive for asking this, but I've always wondered why there's no liberal version of Rush. Or, if there is, why isn't the show as famous as Rush's?
I'd like to answer that, too. It's been proven that Republicans/conservatives are more susceptible to insane conspiracy theories. They're gullible. That's why trump decided to run as a republican. He knew the con flock were starving for b.s. and boy, does he give it to them!

Left leaning talk radio didn't succeed because it never really found an audience for school yard bully rhetoric.
I wish you could give posts a "groan", instead of a "like" for posts like these!

By the way, Checker, every time I see your avatar, it puts that song "Tight Rope" in my mind and I can't get it out. :)

Leon Russell was a dear friend.
I wouldn't categorize it as a "call me up at 3 AM and have a heart to heart" but he always treated me incredibly well considering our strange history. And I remain close friends with his wife Jan and their beautiful family.

I never dreamed I'd end up producing one of his lost films, but there we are...

Because schoolyard bully rhetoric is what Trumpians gravitate to, that stuff repels lefty and Democratic types. It is not constructive.

I'm 66 years old and have voted for more republicans than democrats. I am an army veteran. I support the second amendment and build custom Ruger 10/22s and AR15s. I believe in free markets but think big business tends toward monopolization and should not be involved in politics. I also support women's right to choose and freedom from religion, equal rights, and unions. I think that pretty much puts me in the middle.

Rush ruined us. And it did it all because he had been fired over and over and over and needed the $$$$$.

In 1971 he dropped out of college
At 20yo, he took a job at WIXZ-AM (his name was "Bachelor Jeff" Christie)
In 1973, he was fired ("personality conflict")
In 1974, he started at KQV-AM in Pittsburgh
In late 1974, he was fired
Limbaugh returned to living with his parents
In 1975, he started at KUDL in Kansas City (hosted a public affairs talk program which allowed him to develop his style and present more controversial ideas)
In 1977, he was fired
In 1977, he started at KFIX.
In 1977, he was fired (disagreements with management)
He looked back on himself as "a moderate failure [...] as a deejay"
In 1979, he started with the Kansas City Royals (sales)
In 1983, he started at KMBZ-AM (as Rush Limbaugh)
He was fired
In 1984, he started at KFBK-AM in Sacramento, CA (replacing Morton Downey Jr)
I mean, I don’t like the kind of stuff he spouts but that’s a pretty American story of not giving ip and re-inventing yourself and becoming wildly successful. Im sure 1975 Rush ever thought he’d have the money he does or the influence he does.

Isn't there a video clip of Trump on David Letterman saying this?

The more power you have the more responsible you must be or you become a monster.

I've also used the term 'freedom from religion.'

Railing against talk radio however puts you out of the middle. Take care.

I have often wondered how many of the right wing radio hosts actually believe the stuff they spew, or if it just a really good paying gig.
Same with the right wing authors like Coulter, Dsouza, etc. I remember reading that Rush had Elton John play at one of his weddings, and Elton being a gay liberal, is the antithesis of everything he preaches. On the other hand maybe he just likes Eltons music.

Elton's life has always been a bit "controlled". In 2014 he married David Furnish and by 2015 he had cut off every single person who had ever worked for him, including his manager for 28 years, John Reid and most of his other entourage as well.
Elton's decision to play for Rush might or might not have entirely been his own.

Here's another example of how strange Elton is....he met Leon Russell during his second performance in the United States, citing The Master of Space and Time as his musical idol.
And yet thirty-seven years passed between the time they filled huge arenas together and Elton's decision to hook up with Leon for a new album in the autumn of Leon's life.
Elton expressed heartfelt devotion for Leon in the documentary "The Union" but when Leon passed away and a committee of Leon fans embarked on a mission to raise money for a Leon memorial in Tulsa, my little rock and roll film raised over eleven thousand while Elton only contributed five thousand.
Unbelievable, I actually outraised Elton John...

Father Coughlin was this priest who did conservative talk radio back in the 1920's and 30's. He had 10s of millions of listeners, more than Rush.

.

He was extremely popular.

Unfortunately, he bought into the secret Jewish cabal that was trying to take over the world, conspiracy.

Some of Trumpism draws from Coughlin.

It is totally marketed like hard drugs, you're absolutely right.
Total reward seeking behavior.
