But she was doing well enough to get into college.Assuming for the sake of discussion this young woman's assertions are correct, we can all rest assured those public educational professionals who failed her as a child will not be held to account. Why? Because they never are. There is no accountability for student outcomes in most of our traditional public school systems, and that is a tragic mistake we (collectively) continue to make.

I don’t think it makes it worse. They identified her and put her in sped classes which is what they’re legally supposed to do. If she can prove that her IEP wasn’t followed correctly, she has a case. It sounds like she had a horrible sped teacher for at least part of her time there.
If her statements about her own reading level are correct, then she was almost certainly a diversity selection by the college.But she was doing well enough to get into college.

you're right, maybe she's paying for it all herself and her immigrant parents. $20,000 a year isn't much .... of course, still gotta score high enough on ACT's and SAT's and not being able to read/write would impact that I'd think

My fear is that it is only going to get worse. Years ago, the best and brightest teachers were women who didn’t have many options. Now these same women are going into better paying professions.. We have to pay teachers more …a lot more.

You can't do "very well" in school if you are illiterate. She is suing one of her special education teachers because she was a horrible teacher.
If she was in special ed, that means her disability was identified.Federal law requires that students with disabilities are identified. The responsibility is on the districts to do such.
