Honors student sues because she can't read or write

I wonder who filled out her college applications if she couldn’t read or write. This story sounds like bullshit.
In the article in the OP it mentions that she used text-to-speech apps for that purpose.

Or at least completing assignments?

What parent worth their salt would allow their kid to not be able to read/write????
Quite a few.

Older sister was a teacher. Was. When her kids fell behind or had problems...or were problems...parents would be called in. At which point the parents would scream and yell and try to get her fired for daring to suggest that their little wonder was being a problem or having problems. When the physical threats started coming in, she left.

And the kids get passed on.

She always mentioned that the minorities didn't do that to her that much: it was rare. It was the white, suburbia folks who did the threats and screamed and all that crap.

It all depends on what her IEP says her accommodations are. If an accommodation was writing papers with speech-to-text, then she cannot be failed for not writing it without speech-to-text help. If an accommodation is using audiobooks for literature class, then she cannot be failed for not reading it on her own without help from audio. Therefore, she could pass literacy classes if she had good listening comprehension and speaking abilities.

I want to add that we don't know what her IQ is, how many minutes she had in special education classes, what her goals were (most likely her goals were grade level proficiency, but proficiency of a lower level because of her disability) or even what classes she took.
You can make up whatever circumstances you want to try to make this okay. The reality is most likely very different.

Obviously you haven't been reading what I'm saying because I don't think it's "okay".

If we get paid over 10 months, that means that is all we are working and getting paid for is ten months. that big news to you?
Why shouldn’t coaches get paid? I tutored after school and got paid. Was that wrong?
You don’t know all this so you play act
Then you admit school teachers are grossly overpaid when put in perspective.

Good

Fyi

There is not one school teacher alive who works the kind of hours i did. Not a one.

It is a part time job

A Connecticut student who graduated with honors in June is now suing her former high school, claiming she can't read or write and is failing college as a result of her alma mater's poor curriculum.

Aleysha Ortiz was born in Puerto Rico and moved with her family to Hartford, Connecticut, when she was 5 years old. She graduated through the school program despite reading at a kindergarten or first grade level as a sixth grader, according to reporting by CNN.

During her last month at Hartford Public High School, after she disclosed she was attending the University of Connecticut in the fall, Ortiz completed additional testing that revealed she had dyslexia and "required explicitly taught phonics, fluency and reading comprehension," the first of which is taught in kindergarten.

She's not alone. Every year we have kids going into 5th, 6th, 7th grade who never got the English phonics they needed in elementary school. And, of course, no one is going to teach them that in middle school and high school. They have good expressive English language (which she obviously does if she can "write" papers through speech-to-text programs), but lack in actually reading and writing independently.

Did you read the story?

where are you getting "part time" ?

Lol

They work 10 months, short days when they do work and have a sick amount if holiday time

Again, let's not forget their Cadillac benefits .

ESL kids without a learning disability are also not being taught English phonics in many places in the country. This is a disservice to them.
When my kids were in elementary school, the ESL students were altogether and taught by someone whose first language was Spanish. Sweet, wonderful lady, but the students did NOT learn English (nor did they as they "advanced" through school).

I believe that the home language is incredibly important as a cultural tie. But I can tell you that there are many Spanish-speaking ladies (particularly those who don't work outside the home) who choose not to learn English and who rely on their kids to translate/speak for them. I don't understand living in another country for 30+ years but choosing not to learn even enough English to shop without assistance.

Liberal Democrats LOVE hiding things from parents. Anyone saying any different isn't being honest or truthful. So if this school hid anything from these parents that's on Liberals for creating this system to begin with. Don't blame the schools/teachers

This has nothing to do with this story. Take it elsewhere.

ok so

this girl/woman and family is saying they didn't know she was not capable reading/writing and the school hid it and liberals are like "oh yeah, blame the schools and teachers !!"

hiding things from parents is what liberals have pushed for isn't it ?

do you see the point I'm making ?

No one is talking about "liberals" except you. Not everything has to be about politics. Take it elsewhere.

I am trying to figure out how you think the teachers are grossly overpaid.
When you went home, did you continue working or were you done?. I worked from 8 till three. And then had to go home and grade essays and plan lessons.. do you think your work was as important as educating our young people? That should be one of most important professions. Un since it was a woman done dominated profession they were able to pay women less..
Someone said something interesting. Babysitters get about five dollars an hour. A teacher has 30 kids in a class so she should get. $150 an hour after all, she is babysitting your children as well as educating them..

As I have said that the biggest change I saw in my career were the parents. Parents used to listen to teacher teachers, and now they blame them.

He was definitely talking about liberals. Why didn’t you tell him to stop talking politics? Why didn’t you tell him to take it elsewhere?

I bet you think millions of teachers hide gender identity from parents.. you seem to be hung up on transsexuals which is a teeny teeny part of our population. And by the way, I don’t believe that school districts, excluded parents from knowing sensitive and medical and social information because it is required of teachers to report it.

Do you say that about accountants who make about triple that? Do you say that about lawyers who make about four times what teachers make but big deal a teacher’s job isn’t important…. they only educate our children for the future.. if you cared about children, you would want their teachers who have to deal with 30 in a classroom to ne paid well. And then you wonder why we can’t get teachers anymore.so sad. Have you ever wondered why women dominated professions get paid less than male dominated professions? We are beginning to realize that teachers and nurses and secretaries and social workers deserve more.. My granddaughter just became a nurse at Georgetown Hospital and they gave her a $10,000 signing bonus. She is starting at about $80,000.

I literally did just that. Who do you think I was talking to?

Yet, when I say that as a teacher I am paid well, you say I "think low of myself".

To me, "paid well" means that the average person with average spending habits and property doesn't have to worry about money. What does it mean to you?

The average accountant doesn't make triple the average teacher. Nor does an accountant make a teacher's salary in a week which you claimed earlier in this thread.

fact remains, there is agenda to hide things from parents

if they hide bullying and reading/learning disabilities its just but one more thing to hide isn't it ?

Parents legally have to be invited to any conferences or IEP meetings to discuss her assessments and how she's doing in class. We don't know if they participated. So, no, schools cannot legally hide a reading or learning disability from parents.
