The capital of Finland had zero traffic fatalities during 2024. Thanks to traffic safety measures like lowering speed limits as well as reduced car dependency.

"The city has also invested in new pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, including a comprehensive network of cycling paths that span over 1,500 kilometers. It has boosted its public transportation network with decarbonized and self-driving buses, and received European Investment Bank funding for a new tram line.

Utriainen said the upgrades helped “reduce car use and, with it, the number of serious accidents.” And statistics show that between 2003 and 2023, the number of traffic-related injuries in the city dropped from 727 to just 14.

Helsinki’s success is being noted in Brussels, where the European Commission is pressing to curb road fatalities. Earlier this year, Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas noted most member countries weren’t on track to meet the EU’s 2018 goal of halving traffic-related fatalities by 2030."

There European countries often have much lower traffic fatalities per capita than American states. There reduced car dependency also lead to less C02 emissions and toxic air pollution as well as saving a lot of money for households.

Using traffic death/injury statistics based on population, rather than miles driven, is ridiculous.

Utriainen said the upgrades helped “reduce car use and, with it, the number of serious accidents.”

The less people drive, the better traffic death/injury statistics will get.

Traffic fatalities in America are simply evidence that we are rugged individualist freedom loving people.

In other words, we're selfish, self-centered, and don't give a **** about our fellow citizens. MURICA!
Yeah, because killing someone with your car is no big deal and has no impact on the driver except maybe feeling bad about it.

It also impact death/injury per distance. That the deaths per distance is lower in for example Finland and Sweden compared to the US. A reason for that is that people that are to tired, stressed and unskilled to drive have more alternatives to driving in those countries.

Also that less traffic means less money is needed for maintenance and construction of new roads. So there can be more money to make roads better and safer.

Is it at Finland that has one of the most rigorous tests to get a driver's license?

Finland and other European countries have much more rigorous written and practical driving tests than American states. Driving tests can become a lot easier in countries like the US where people more often need to drive to get to work and do errands.

Are their per-mile deaths higher than the US?

Also, exactly how are you adjusting zero for differences in miles driven per capita?

That’s a good question. But no traffic deaths in a city of almost 700,000 is pretty awesome.

Aren’t the cost of traffic violations based on income? The wealthy pay far more than the less wealthy, based on income?

I’d like to see a system like that in the states.

Many European countries have fines based on income while Finland take it to the next level. With a businessman getting a 100 000 Euros fine for speeding. Thee it's roughly same amount in Dollars.

My guess is self driving cars will save thousands of lives very soon.

And yet you choose to live here; why is that? Pack you stuff and head for Helsinki!!

Interesting, what’s safer elevators or airplanes?
Based on the number of people transported and the aggregate mileage and safety record, elevators are by far safer than airplanes.

In New York City alone at any given time there are literally tens of thousands of people in elevators with virtually zero fatalities or injuries 24/7. That's just one city. Multiply that by thousands of metropolitan population centers around the globe, and the safety record is astounding.

Wow, that's all I have to say.

A better solution might be to organize and make your voice heard. There this is the reason that traffic in cities all across the worl have become safer. Even if Helsinki is a really nice city.
