Hegseth intends to rename USNS Harvey Milk

I can only imagine the jokes told about the sailors assigned to a ship named after a man for no reason other than he was gay.
Is this post real? Tell me you're seriously concerned about elementary school shit going on in our navy.

For being a gay politician at city level government?
For any reason. Again, there's no law against naming a navy ship whatever you want. It's a purely political decision. It has nothing whatsoever to do with military readiness. Never has. Naming traditions and conventions are applied inconsistently at best.

Naming military after individuals is reserved for significant military deeds or be becoming commander in chief, not for civilian notoriety.
Wrong of course

So why has there not been a hip named after Martin Luther King?
Ask the navy, not me.

But milk was a civil rights figure
And a ship named after civil rights figures was named after him
It's not rocket science

Cool! I will lobby to have a ship named: "Let's Go Brandon".

No, but it isn't as egregious as Harvey Milk.
I have this feeling that the whole thing is kinda arbitrary and Hegseth worrying about the name of a refueling vessel is simply culture war bullshit.

It has little to do with the name of a ship and everything to do about red meat for the MAGA base. Their hate is insatiable.

Wrong.

"In 1955, he (Milk) resigned from the Navy at the rank of lieutenant, Junior Grade*, forced to accept an "other than honorable" discharge and leave the service rather than be court-martialed because of his homosexuality." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvey_Milk

*(equivalent to a First Lieutenant in the Army).

Bottom line, he did nothing in military service to deserve a ship of any size be named after him. Nor IMO anything during his subsequent employment and political career.

SecDef Hegseth is simply doing what he has stated, i.e. seeking to make the Military an organization for War Fighters, not social justice warriors.

You support removing his name because he was gay.

If the ship was named after Hegseth you’d be okay with it.

And you don’t value his contributions to society because his contributions entailed equal rights for gay people.

It's a rebuke of gay pride month.

IMO? The answer is yes. There are many areas of concern that the military command has to deal with, and pride in service is one of them.

What are you saying? Are you saying military personnel would be ashamed of working on a ship named after a gay person?

Anything that improves morale and fighting spirit improves the combat abilities of the service members. I begin to think you have no military service in your history.

Why would anyone’s morale or fighting spirit be impaired by working on a ship named after a homosexual?
