Hegseth intends to rename USNS Harvey Milk

Homophobia is an ugly thing to live with. Ridicule of someone who accomplished something in his life (as opposed to basement dwellers who never accomplished anything) speaks to a small, insecure mind.
There is a lot of fear on the right. They feel threatened easily, it seems.

What exactly did you find in it that justifies naming a Navy ship after him?
Became a city councilman, fought for human rights, and like Martin Luther King was assassinated for it.

Navy ships should be named after sailors who either received the Navy Cross medal, or after sailors who received the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Milk didn't even get an honorable discharge.

The class of ship is named after John Lewis.

Should the whole class be renamed?

I think once Hegseth wakes up from his bender he's going to see this news and go "What the hell did I do???" but then again, this is likely how he wakes up and his very first question 3/4/5 days out of every week.

TACO will pat him on the head "good boy!"

And stamps should honor only our most notable Postmasters General!

SecDef Hegseth is simply doing what he has stated, i.e. seeking to make the Military an organization for War Fighters, not social justice warriors.

What about Bone Spur Warriors?

Will there be lots of those?

So...no USS Norton Sound? No USS Yorktown? No USS Skipjack?

To be fair, what did Harvey Milk do that should have given him the honor of having a Navy ship named after him? His highest achievement was getting elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He was actually more known for his murder giving Diane Feinstein notoriety that ultimate led to her Senate career.
You have a distorted notion of “fair”.

Not every Naval vessel is named in honor of Presidents, MOH recipients, famous battles, etc..

Milk was a crusader for gay rights/acceptance when being an openly gay public figure was dangerous all in itself. During his brief tenure in office, before being assassinated, he sponsored a bill banning discrimination based on sexual orientation in public accommodations, housing, and employment that was signed into law.

Think that’s bad? Just wait until someone names an aircraft carrier the USS Donald J. Trump. 😆

While I am not a huge fan of Harvey Milk, this is pretty much just sour grapes and vindictive.

Hegseth gave some bull shit about reestablishing a warrior culture.

:ROFLMAO:

Actually, just bigotry is all that it is.
USNS HARVEY MILK isn’t the only ship Hegseth has his sights set on;

Navy set to rename USNS Harvey Milk, mulls new names for other ships named for civil rights leaders

“… documents obtained by CBS News also show other vessels named after prominent leaders are also on the Navy's renaming "recommended list."

Among them are the USNS Thurgood Marshall, USNS Ruth Bader Ginsburg, USNS Harriet Tubman, USNS Dolores Huerta, USNS Lucy Stone, USNS Cesar Chavez and USNS Medgar Evers.

CBS News found that a December 2024 web article from Naval Sea Systems Command about the laying of the keel for the future USNS Thurgood Marshall has been deleted.”

“Following his confirmation in January, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a directive instructing the Pentagon and U.S. military services to cease hosting events tied to heritage or awareness months, citing concerns that such programs could undermine unity within the ranks. The "Identity Months Dead at DoD" guidance banned official manpower and resources from being used on such events — among them, Pride Month, Black History Month and Women's History Month.”

Yes.

Any one of the 100 or so American black soldiers and sailors who received the medal of honor in and since the Civil War ought to be on a ship before Milk or Lewis.

The next Democratic President should not only retaliate in kind, but should hit them where it hurts most.

Rename the USS Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush and Gerald Ford.

If they want to play petty games like this, let them know there will be a huge karmic price to pay.

Apparently, in order to satisfy the easily triggered and insecure magacult, and their idea of what "great" means, all hints of diversity and inclusivity must be eliminated because they want to pretend people different from them simply do not exist. (regardless of the fact that they do exist, and will continue to exist despite anything the magacult does)

Hello.

'Great' does not mean pretending different people don't exist.

This is the real world. People are different. Diversity is what makes America great, not pretending it doesn't exist.

The magacult sure has their heads pretty far up their asses.

America, we need to vote these sick ugly people the heck out of power.

They are making us look really backward to the rest of the world.

While Milk or Lewis should never have been honored on a military vessel, which I assume an oiler is, Hegseth was unwise to create a needless controversy. However, I still believe that honoring military personae's, American cities, Native American tribes, forts, battles, etc. is unifying an appropriate - not a gay politician and activist because he was murdered by a sick man pissed off for not getting his job back.
