We need a fun poll for today, so here it is...

Have you ever run out of gas?

Yes, or no.

Me: Yes, all in my younger days, though.

Never! I have this thing about always making sure I have enough gas, probably from all the times when I was a kid and my mom would run out making me walk or wait while it was hot or freezing.

Yes, all the time in high school and pre Marine Corps. I dont think I have since though.

Not since I was about 17 years old. Every once in awhile, I come close, because I just don't pay enough attention.

Yes. I was trying to run the tank as low as possible to get rid of all the 10% ethanol crap I bought by mistake.

I just ran the tank down to far. Oops.

Ran out of propane while on a skiing vacation once. Mold grows well in a cool, leaky trailer house environment.

Once in a work vehicle with a gauge that was misreading by about a quarter tank.

Never.

Interesting factoid...

Truck drivers in the Army have gotten Article 15's (non-judicial punishment) for running out of fuel.

Technically yes. I did it as a professional too. I was taking a calculated risk because at the time way back when I worked for a company that was experimenting with electronic logs and if I stopped I was stuck. (I was abusing a traffic rule used for log books.;)) Anyhow I got to my fuel station but did not take into account I might have to wait at the pumps. Anyhow I ran out of fuel just as I was pulling up to the pump. I literally coasted the last 20ft. But I got to the pumps. Though after I fueled I spent a good 40 minutes priming the motor by hand. So yep I ran out of fuel before. Normally I don't go below a quarter, and if I am not sure of the gauge I will stick it and log it. Ahh to be young and dumb.

Yes. Nearly every time that I mow grass it happens - usually after about 45 minutes. ;)

Hot day; countryside; motorcycle; leather gear; helmet. I advise against it.

In the distant past, sure. I don't think I have in 25-30 years though.

Never.

that is mostly given to fuelers,as someone transporting over 1k gallons of fuel running out of fuel in their own truck suffered an epic fail.

they do give them sometimes to non fueler drivers though,as part oif the pre checks is to check the fuel level, and if you do,you had better hope you had a bad fuel guage.

ofcourse my ng unit had someone run out of fuel about ten feet outside the armory,in a convoy for a 3 hour drive.so granted sometimes they need to because people are idiots and doing such things in combat gets people killed.

almost ran out in my Jeep once. rolled into the station on fumes, and it was really cold out. cashier had turned off the pumps, and couldn't turn them back on. he drove me to the next station to get a few gallons.

my bike has no gauge, so i sometimes have to kick to reserve. it rarely happens, though. i keep a pretty close eye on the trip odometer.

I spent time as a Motor Sergeant with a transportation unit in Germany. Our truck drivers hauled cargo from the port to all over Europe. They had US and Allied locations all over the place where they could refuel and they also had fuel coupons they could use at any civilian truck stop. So, if they ran out of fuel, it was considered negligence that affected their mission. While Article 15's didn't happen very often, they did happen from time to time.

Yes.

A few years after my son was born I began working on my Flight Instructor license. The school was at Islip MacArthur Airport on Long Island and I was living in a rented house in Queens NY at the time. My son was about 5 or 6 was fascinated by my motorcycle, which I kept parked on a concrete slab in front of the house where garbage pails were supposed to go on garbage collection days. The kid couldn't pass up the opportunity to touch the bike whenever he passed it.

So one night after work I head out to ISP for three hours of simulated teaching. Since it's summer I took the bike for the 40 mile ride on the Long Island Expressway. When class ended I start home and about halfway the engine sputters indicating that I've emptied the main tank and need to flip to the reserve tank. On this bike, and every bike as far as I know, the reserve tank is really just an outlet a little lower than the main outlet in the bike's single fuel tank. Reserve is good for at least 20 miles, maybe more, so it isn't any kind of a problem. Just flip the valve to reserve and find a gas station. Not big deal.

Except that when I reach down to turn the valve it already is on reserve. Engine dies I park the bike on the side of the LIE and proceed to walk 2 miles to the next exit for gas. In motorcycle boots that were not designed for walking.

I can't say 100% for sure that my kid fiddled with the valve but I suspect that he did. At least that's what I tell myself to salve my ego.
I also promised he'd pay. Kid's 25 now and hasn't paid yet. :)

Never. I came close one time trying to get to the gas station nearest my house with the cheapest gas, I rode for a little bit with the light on, but I didn't, and I don't expect I ever will. I'm very attentive to the gas meter.

No, I always had a habit when I got down to a quarter of a tank to filler up.

Greetings, Pero. :2wave:

Me, too! I think women are more likely to fill up earlier than men overall, because being stranded is scarier for women - to men it's more of an annoyance. I don't have any statistics, but from what I've heard, women are more likely to have Triple A, too - generally speaking, few of us know how to change a tire, and even if we did, most women would not have the strength to even loosen the lug nuts, let alone wrestle a tire off and then replace it with the spare!

LOL, okay. My youngest daughter almost always drives her car until the light comes on telling her she is almost empty. Yeah, I have had several calls from her to come fix a flat. She lives close, perhaps too close. There is always daddy.

Yep, and hubbies, sons, lovers, brothers - wait a minute...they're all male! Son-of-a-gun! I wonder if I called a girlfriend...yep, she'd probably send one of the above...........

You wouldn't have it any other way. She's blessed to have you around!
