It's mostly a Germanic or Scandinavian thing, not sure if you heard about our tradition.

Next week, virtually every town puts up May poles here ... in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and elsewhere.

Traditions vary from town to town, but generally people come together on May 1 or so to drink a lot and climb up the tree or dance around it.

Children and teenagers put tree resin on their hand and feet and climb up the 30 meter tree to get presents such as sausages or chocolate or pastry.

It is hell of a fun.

And the tradition is for men in towns to steal the erected tree in a neighbor town during the night.

I wish America had more pagan traditions like this.

The lack of climbing gear is worrisome.

Potayto/potahto!

BCT was at Ft. Ord in the early 1970s. We marched to the rifle range past a field that looked like asparagus stalks were planted in neat rows. From near the bottom to almost the top, they looked as though someone had chewed on the entire circumference of the pole. It was part of the Army lineman school where the guys were trained in using gaffs.

I've known coworkers who cut out when pole climbing. The splinters have to be removed in the ER - hundreds of them.
