It's mostly a Germanic or Scandinavian thing, not sure if you heard about our tradition.
Next week, virtually every town puts up May poles here ... in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and elsewhere.
Traditions vary from town to town, but generally people come together on May 1 or so to drink a lot and climb up the tree or dance around it.
Children and teenagers put tree resin on their hand and feet and climb up the 30 meter tree to get presents such as sausages or chocolate or pastry.
It is hell of a fun.
And the tradition is for men in towns to steal the erected tree in a neighbor town during the night.

Der Maibaum wird aufgestellt
Das Salzburger Landesinstitut für Volkskunde spricht von Maibaum-Bräuchen seit dem Mittelalter, diese sind aber in der heutigen Form als Feste mit Volkstanz im 19. Jahrhunderts entstanden. Eine flächendeckende Verbreitung des Brauches fand erst im 20. Jahrhundert statt. Wohl kein anderer Baum...
