So I been watching re-runs of this show on OWN and am starting to wonder if this is some form of child abuse. I mean these teens did not get this big without the help of their parents and it breaks my heart to watch them struggle and one of them even died. Or maybe all of them as this is a repeat of a show that aired on other networks.
So my question is do you feel it is child abuse to overfeed your children and allow them to overeat to the point of being this obese?
I know that in our culture sometimes cooking and feeding is the act of showing love but feeding your children to the point where it takes the fire dept. to get them out of the house and to the hospital is not love.
Yes I think it is child abuse.
Was this the kid?
If so, I saw the episode. I remember the mom being pretty messed up in the head. She wanted to keep him dependent on her and she obstructed the health professionals trying to help him. When she was around, she treated him like a 2 year old and he acted like one too. It also seemed she enjoyed the attention, like a Munchhousen (however you spell that) by proxy thing. I don't know that I think it's abuse but the mom needs to be on meds or something.
As a side note, when I comes to adults that let themselves get so big they don't leave the bed for years, I seriously wonder what mindset it takes to be ok with letting yourself live like that.

I think it would depend on the situation. If one of the parents was doing it purposefully I think maybe one could make the argument. But if they're really trying to get their kid to eat better and either through genetics or the child's behavior they cannot get the weight down; then that wouldn't be abuse.
Agreed. Their's is a very co-dependent relationship. I'm almost surprised she even let him have the surgery in the first place. On the show after he had been in hospital the first time and was allowed to go home so he could lose enough weight to get to a treatment center/rehab? She would still bring him home all kinds of junk foods and things. He had to get to a certain weight before he could be safe for surgery and she was not helping at all. She was an enabler.
I do know there's something natural about teasing the little fatty. There's got to be some sort of pressure to stay healthy.I do not think its abuse. I think its more like neglect. The parent is weak willed and as a result failed to tell their no.

I think I just wanted to post this rather than reply to a post.

people who degrade others becasue of their physical appearance are very insecure. it's natural for those types of people to tease "the little fatty" so they can make themselves feel better.

I imagine that if they were actually concerned with what assholes thought then they wouldn't be that big in the first place. There's got to be some sort of pressure to stay healthy.
Well maybe she should get some help too. The kid makes a choice too though, and it could be tough to resist temptation particularly from a family member. But the doctor told him the score, he's aware of the consequences now. The mom probably needs to get some help herself, she most likely has problems of her own.
I am sick and tired of making excuses for fat people. We can't say what we think about them because it will hurt their feelings... They can't be faulted for their fatness because someone else is always to blame. HOGWASH!!! If you are fat and obese, it is YOUR FAULT! No one elses... It is about time we can tell people that. I am tired of people telling me I am too thin (BTW, I am thin, but also athletic and rather muscular). The fact is, I am NOT too thin, but it usually comes from people who are actually a little bit on the fat side... but I can't say that... can it... it is rude and impolite... REDICULOUS!!! Fat people are FAT!!! it is about time they realize this and do something about it... and if one of those fatsos EVER oozes over into my airplane seat that I can COMFORTABLY sit in... %$^%$%!!!!
