GOP objection could jeopardize jobless benefits

Senator Bunning's filibuster thwarted not only the will of the Democratic caucus but that of the Republican caucus, too. Senator Kyle, R-AZ, predicted Sunday that the benefits extension will pass this week and well it should. And one should safely suspect that Senator Bunning who is retiring this year will not be missed by many, if any, of his colleagues in the next congress.

All he is saying is pay for the thing before you spend the money...........What a novel idea huh....

I guess the question is how long do you keep extending benefits without paying for them..We are in a vicious circle here abd Obama Care will cost one sixth of the budget.......

It's not fair in the least ... to small business owners. However, that law was designed to keep overpaid bonus bunnies from receiving enourmous amounts of money from unemployment.

Unemployment is based on the salary an employee is paid. Now if a useless bonus jockey scumbag where to apply and get 60% of his salary (which for the sake of argument we will say is $250,000 per year) he would be receiving $165,000.00 or more every other week from the government.

As such, business owners, and other such persons, are denied the right to collect. They can live on their bonuses... or sell some yachts, cars, or their third or fourth house in the Hampdens.

The working poor on the other hand can use those benefits because they have no obnoxiously large bonuses to live off of.

You have absolutely no idea of how unemployment benefits are calculated, do you. Here is a hint.... you only get a small % of your normal take home pay as a benefit.... there is a cap on the max benefit each week..... there is a maximum amount that can be paid for a claim..... each state has different amounts and percentages.

A person working for a corporation that got a $1,000,000 salary and was laid off would get the same benefit amount as a nurse that got laid off..... they would both get max.

Nothing but rhetoric, you don't even know that.

Yeah, people that demand that Congress follow the laws they pass are a real thorn in the side aren't they???

Obama urged Congress to restore Paygo in his state of the union address in January. Congress did restore it in February, and less than a month later are ignoring it. Bunning is only revealing the hypocrisy in Congress.

It's funny how elected officials start doing the right thing when they don't have to worry about getting elected again isn't it??

My thoughts on the matter lean more toward extending these benefits as a necessary evil. Many people lost their jobs through no fault of their own and now are in dire straits. I would prefer to see benefits extended than have the bigger social crises of homelessness, poverty, etc. I think it would be less costly in the long term to extend the benefits now than have to clean up a bigger social mess later.
agree completely, regarding extending the benefits.

Bunning Does it Again:
In face of criticism, Sen. Bunning blocks jobless benefits again
Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) stood firm Tuesday in single-handedly blocking the Senate from extending unemployment benefits, highway funds and other programs in the face of mounting criticism from Democrats and pleas from his own party.
The Department of Transportation furloughed 2,000 employees without pay Monday, and state officials warned that unless Congress this week restores the transportation funding, which provides states with $42 billion a year, construction contracts will be delayed, construction loans may be jeopardized and projects suspended.

Hold on now, we can still eliminate the entire military and have plenty for unemployment beneifits, or did you forget that option? :2razz:

***** Never was this vast ideological chasm, this Massive divide defined better;)

When I hear this joker speak, I'm reminded of a classic response to hecklers George Carlin used --

"Will somebody please stick a dick that guy's mouth!!"

This loon is detached from reality. He's talking about missing a football game while people are suffering.

Of course, Bunning was a pitcher, so he enjoys sticking it to his fellow man.

All of which can be summarized as "This guy advocates for a political position I disagree with, but rather than explain why I disagree, I'm just going to call him names."

So you don't think Congress should obey the laws they pass, even one passed only a few weeks ago??

My grandfather has 28 grandkids and none of us have turned out like him at all.

Point fail.

I don't understand why those on the rightwing generalize people on unemployment as being lazy or rednecks watching TV?

Mass generalizations are drawn all the time - They are based on a minority of people who do abuse the system, commit the fraud and are laze abouts (etc etc). Most people don't fit into that category at all but there are those who do - in the same way that not all black people are gang banging thugs, but some are. Or the generalization that a southern white boy is racist - most are not but there are some who are.

I think a lot of people who have been fortunate to stay hold of their job simply cannot (or just haven't take the time) to imagine how you can live without a job.

My husband being unemployed right now would be hell on earth - and I wouldn't want to go through it and sure as hell don't envy people who are living that right now.

It's almost as annoying as when people generalize about an entire political ideology by making demonstrably false statements about what they think. I hate that, don't you?

Amazing there is a senator that actually wants to hold the democrats feet to the fire and make them get the billions of dollars before they spend it......

What a novel idea.........

A typical Liberal, they love to spend money as long as its not theirs......

You completely don't understand what's going on here and what's at stake and who's being hurt by a has-been baseball player trying to get air time...
