https://www.businessinsider.com/wil...idea-fiber-optic-cable-instead-of-wall-2019-1
This is a great idea, killing two birds with one stone by securing our border with a fiber optic cable and sensors for most of the border. It would also make it possible to have this system used for high speed internet in rural areas where it is now impossible because of expense. It would sense not only digging, but all of those trucks and cars Trump is talking about that havae women tied up in the back seats with tape across their mouths. That last was a joke. Need a little humor now and then.

1. Trump isn't talking about a wall from sea to shining sea.
2. What is the cost of this fiber optic cable and associated hardware and software?
I suspect these points contribute to the reason he hasn't talked to the President about his idea.
A fiber optic cable used as a sensor? How does that work?

And when the coyotes cut the cable? Then what?
Or, they just cruise on across it, because there nothing physically stopping them, alarms go off in a BP station and by the time the agents get there, poof! they're all gone.
Are you praising this idea because you know it won't work?
They tried motion sensors in Vietnam. The enemy either disabled them, or avoided them.

Technology has advanced a lot farther since Vietnam. Devices are smaller (meaning that they can be hidden a lot easier), can be used at longer ranges etc etc. And in order to cut the cable they're going to have to dig for it...in the mean time the sensors are going hog wild with the location. If a sensor does happen to go out those investigating can bring a spare to hook up.
And from the sounds of it the sensors could track whoever crosses the border for miles and miles (assuming it is laid out properly) and the trespassers could be intercepted with that practically real time information.

So the purpose is what? To keep a record of how many illegal migrants have come into the USA? A sensor never stopped anyone nor slowed anyone down.
Have you ever priced fiber optic cable ?

The cable would be buried.
Not now he isn’t. He walked it back.1. Trump isn't talking about a wall from sea to shining sea.
Less than a wall.2. What is the cost of this fiber optic cable and associated hardware and software?

Regardless of how deep it's buried the idea of it being cut isn't out of the question.
About 1-6 dollars per foot depending on fiber count. At $6 per foot with 2k miles that comes out to about $63,360,000. Not bad actually. Less than what the materials would cost to build a concrete wall or a steel slat wall. Concrete costs around 7-12 dollars per sq foot. Steel costs around 7-10 per foot. These prices are what I could find using google.
I would suspect that if you are burying optic cable by the mile, you could get it pretty cheap.
