good article on the case for the death penalty

talloulou said:
The death penalty is barbaric and just as we have advanced enough to give up crucifixions, stonings, throwing to the lions, ect we will eventually stop the barbaric practice of killing prisoners.

The article is stupid in that it seems to suggest that the death penalty works as a suitable deterrant to others who would be criminals. First, I'm not sure statistics prove this theory to be true. Second, even if it were true it does not mean we should do it.

If I chopped off my daughter's hand cause she stole something she might never steal again. Does that mean I SHOULD chop off her hand for stealing?

Barbaric practices slowly drop away as society advances...

How can something be barbaric if civilized societies have been executing criminals for thousands of years?
Is barabric because you think it is cruel to these vermin behind bars?

People do escape from prison.

The deck is already stacked against the accused in any capitol crime case because no one that is against capitol punishment is allowed to be on a jury. Every juror member in capitol cases approves of the death penalty.

Yeah boo hoo poor murderere who is facing justice, snif snif we all should feel sorry for this poor man whose only crime was that he killed someone, what is so bad about that

So a person that is against the death penalty cannot logically deduce guilt or innocence in one of these cases?

A Juror's job is also to decide the punishment of the guilty and all options for punbishment have to be considered, which is why people against the death penalty would most likely be barred from jury duty in such cases.

Why don't you go ahead and provide your definition of "barbaric" and then we can proceed with the discussion.

"Of, relating to, or characteristic of barbarians" according to dictionary.com

1 entry found for barbarians.
bar·bar·i·an Audio pronunciation of "barbarians" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (bär-bâr-n)
n.

1. A member of a people considered by those of another nation or group to have a primitive civilization.
2. A fierce, brutal, or cruel person.
3. An insensitive, uncultured person; a boor. See Synonyms at boor.

from dictionary.com as well.

Many civilized countries have done away with capital punishment. The fact that we still have it in the US leads many other nations to view our continued use of capital punishment to be primitive. So I would think that fits definition #1.

Definition 2 is debatable but I certainly view it as cruel and brutal no matter how it's done.

Definition 3 doesn't really apply unless I were to accuse you of being a boor.

Definition one does not describe capital punishmen,t it describes barbariains as people of a primitive civilization.

Definition 2 is debatable but I certainly view it as cruel and brutal no matter how it's done.

Definition two would describe the murderer, not the justice system that gave the murderer the death sentence. What the murdererer did to his victims is cruel.Telling the vicitm's family that they get to pay for the murderer's room, board, entertainment, medical care and other things for the rest of the murderer's life is cruel.
