ONE man here weighs just 77 pounds. Another, 98. Last thing I knew, I weighed 132, but that was a month ago.I’ve been on a hunger strike since Feb. 10 and have lost well over 30 pounds. I will not eat until they restore my dignity.
I’ve been detained at Guantánamo for 11 years and three months. I have never been charged with any crime. I have never received a trial.

Hunger Strike will work out just as well for these people as it did for Bobby Sands...

Sorry, but it's a little difficult for me to pity someone who caused their own misery. Gitmo isn't killing him. He's killing himself.

What crime did he and other Gitmo detainies commit? If they commited a crime, put them on military trial (not even talking about civilian trial here), and convict them officially. Otherwise, they should be let go.

he has not been convicted or even charged.

Guess he should have just kept tending to his goats, instead of shooting at our soldiers. Seems there was a choice in there, somewhere.

Wonder if they have Saturday mail pick up down there?

Why the hell didnt they just shoot them instead of bringing them home with them. If the guy was actively in combat he is not a criminal, he is the enemy. Cant he be sent home when his arthritis is too bad to fire a weapon or something?

if you were jailed without being charged, I would pity you.

I guess no proof is required.

Libertarians defending the Star Chamber. pathetic!

So much for that moral high ground, beacon-of-liberty for the rest of the world thing we had goin for us.

and how would you compare the moral high ground of the enemy combants who do harm to thier own people and ours?

The hunger strike is of his own doing. The article is giving one sides opinion.

The detainees in Gitmo are considered prisoners of war. Prisoners of war are not normally charged, tried and convicted. They are detained until the war is over. It has been this way for a couple of centuries.

What war is that? And if you say "the war on terror" I'm going to laugh.

You're right we've been engaged no wars in the last 10 years. Go back to sleep.

How is Gitmo killing him when he is starving himself? It takes a special kind of stupid to starve yourself and think your oppressors will care. If they cared about you they wouldn't oppress you in the first place, so why would they care if you decide to go on a hunger strike?

The war with who? Both the Afghan and Iraqi governments that we fought have long since been toppled. Who are we at war with? Al Qaeda? Does that war continue until every single member is dead? Does it start back up the moment someone decides to start a new AQ? There is no formal war, and thus no formal prisoners of war.

And we are enemy combatants to them, doing a lot of harm to their people. We shouldn't treat people worse than we would want to be treated ourselves.

We have had the Aghganistan war, which has been won according to conservatives. We have had the Iraq war, which conservatives have said we won. So what war are we holding these in Gitmo for? They should be tried by military and then convicted or released to their governments.

No, it isn't libertarians defending the Star Chamber. It's people who can understand that in war, **** happens, and nothing is fair. I am the last person who you would see defending the joke that we call a war on terrorism, but make no mistake, these prisoners didn't end up in Gitmo by coincidence.

As far as I am concerned, return every one of them back to where they came from, and let them lead the same ****ty lives they were living before.

Oh? Are we withholding food?

We are withholding justice.

It's been 11 years. They are either guilty or they ain't.

Denying due process, makes us look like hypocrites and tarnishes our image abroad.

I, for one, think it matters greatly what the world thinks of us.

Some who sympathize with those who do harm to us feel this way.

as far as your second point. The extremists set the standard when they cut of the heads of some of their prisoners.
